Our Guide to… The Best Designer Christmas Trees

Sunday 7th December 2014

It is beginning to look a lot like Christmas in the capital, the Christmas lights are up, Michael Bublé can be heard everywhere you go and there is the sweet smell of mulled wine in the air. With the Norwegian fir taking pride of place in Trafalgar Square last week, we decided to get into the Christmas spirit by rounding up some of the most beautiful Christmas trees that are gracing the city this year. From gingerbread tree’s to winter wonderlands you will certainly find some tree-nspiration from these picks, leaving you feeling ready to tackle your own!

For the Christmas Readers: One Aldwych

Bringing an extra touch of fantasy to London this year, One Aldwych, is celebrating Lewis Carroll’s enchanting 1865 novel with an Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland Christmas tree. The 25-foot tall tree is wrapped in a dazzling 1km garland of wintry pale blue tulle entwined with sparkly white asparagus fern illuminated by 100 hidden fairy lights. The tree itself is then encircled by 80 glittering cream organza cupcakes, along with 100 tea cups and 70 tea pots sourced from vintage shops and painted shiny silver. Dangling glass bottles with a pink concoction and the words ‘Drink Me’ evoke the magic potion Alice drinks which makes her shrink. www.onealdwych.com

For the Christmas Trendsetters: Claridge’s

For those that love everything to do with fashion, head to Claridge’s, where you can feast your eyes on the annual Christmas tree which has been designed by none other than Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, the figureheads of D&G and long-time guests of the hotel. The tree which has been dedicated to all the children of the world, combines the real with the imaginary with an enchanted forest theme, evoking in the words of Dolce and Gabanna themselves, the night before Christmas. Complemented by hundreds of hand-painted blown glass spheres that immortalise some of the city’s most famous landmarks, and sat upon a royal throne, this is a tree fit for a festive, fashionista queen. www.claridges.co.uk

For the Christmas Eaters: Corinthia Hotel

Christmas is a time for indulging and if like us, you love everything to do with festive food, then head to the Corinthia Hotel, where you will find a ten foot Christmas made entirely out of gingerbread. Yes, you heard us correctly- 10ft…that is bigger than the one we have at home. Oh and did we mention it is edible too, meaning not only will you be able to marvel at all of its prettiness but you can take a bite too. Yes please! www.corinthia.com

For the Christmas Jet Setters: Brown’s Hotel

For those of you that love to travel, make sure that you stop off at the Brown’s hotel in Mayfair, where you will find a Christmas tree decorated with miniature suitcases that will be the apple of any wanderlust traveller’s heart. Teaming up with the legendary, British luggage company: Globe Trotter, Brown’s has created an elegant tree set around a jet-setting theme. Make sure to look out for the beautiful Christmas tree stack of Globe Trotter voyager suitcases complete with golden baubles, getting you into the festive spirit whilst also making its way onto your Christmas wish-list. www.roccofortehotels.com

For the Christmas Snow Queen’s: The Berkeley

The Berkeley has embraced its inner Narnia this year with a Christmas tree designed by McQueens which would be any Snow Queen’s delight. Adorned with white, the tree infuses winter splendour whilst also transporting you to a fairy tale world with a measure of refined elegance. The tree is the perfect backdrop for a wintry day and certainly worth a visit. www.the-berkeley.co.uk

For the Christmas Adventurers: The Shangri- La at The Shard

If you love heights, then head to The Shangri-La at The Shard, where the hotel will be transformed into a ‘winter forest in the sky’, featuring not one but several Christmas trees throughout its interior. As you walk through the entrance you will immediately feel as though you are in a winter wonderland with a beautiful arrangement of elegant pine trees with just enough wintry glow and warmth to be endearing. Make sure to look out for Rudolph while you are there! www.the-shard.com

For the Christmas Traditionalists: The Ritz

Be it afternoon tea or sensational bedrooms, The Ritz never disappoints and its tree this year is no different. Taking pride of place in the centre of the hotel, the tree exudes timeless festive elegance with a colour scheme of Christmassy reds and greens. It will be hard not to get into the Christmas spirit when you see it, pleasing the most Grinchy of Grinches. www.theritzlondon.com

For the Christmas Artists: The Wellesley

If you are staying in London this year and feeling particularly creative, head to The Wellesley, where as part of their Very Merry Penthouse Experience, you will welcomed with your own in-suite tree, waiting to be decorated. Making your styling job that little bit easier, you will be provided with items to decorate the tree with as well as a twenty four hour Christmas Elf Butler service. We are sure what you create will be impressive enough to include in our Handbook Hall of Fame, so get stuck in and make it one to remember.
