So you’re doing Veganuary. You’ve been to a bunch of nice restaurants and guzzled more cauliflower steaks than you can shake a turnip at, but the food you’re eating at home? It’s basically leaves and daal. Before your bowels turn on you, you’d better get shopping in some proper vegan shops. They’ll show you exactly what you need to buy, ensure that you’re doing it right (it’s shocking how many items actually aren’t vegan) and hopefully give you more scope to broaden your menus, and make heading home for dinner something to look forward to.
Presumably not named after the nerve agent, Vx is a vegan mainstay up on the Caledonian Road. Founded back in 2010, when veganism practically hadn’t been invented, it lays claim to being the original vegan store. Run by a dedicated staff, it’s got a seriously independent feel and the range is only matched by the expertise behind the counter. They also serve a pretty mean selection of vegan junk food, snacks, cakes and the like (North London types can even Deliveroo it!).
Where: 73 Caledonian Road, King's Cross, N1 9BT
On the shop front, for one month only, are a brand who are definitely going to be Crusshing it over Veganuary. Because it’s Crussh, and the ‘Fit food and juice bars’ will be turning its Soho store into a 100% vegan shop for the duration. The Broadwick Street store will stock vegan food and drink (over 50 lines, to be (in)precise) including best seller, their Jackfruit Tinga Fit Bowls, all ready to take away.
Where: 14 Broadwick Street, Soho, W1F 8HP
A godsend for smart mummies, healthy eaters and vegans alike, Planet Organic have a number of outposts across the capital, from central London’s Tottenham Court to backwaters like Wandsworth. And the range is rather impressive, with plenty of ready-made products to all manner of groceries.
Where: Various across London
Of course, it’s not just food that’s vegan; what about all your other stuff? If Vegauary’s a success it’s quite possible you’ll be thinking of other areas of your life to veganise. Which is where Camden’s The Third Estate comes in, it’s a shop selling shoes, clothes, household bits-and-bobs that are all free from any animal products. Throw those Church’s shoes in the skip, feed the Lamboutins to your dog, shizz is about to get serious.
Where: 27 Brecknock Road, Camden, N7 0BT
Another great source of vegan, as well as veggie wholefoods, ecological household goods is Earth Natural Foods in Kentish Town. Their selection of fairtrade, vegan, gluten-free, wheat-free and biodynamic foods is more than decent, this is a Kentish Town gem!
Where: 200 - 202 Kentish Town Road, Kentish Town, NW5 2AE
Let’s start with the big daddy: Whole Foods. This healthy eating behemoth is slowly spreading its tentacles across the capital, with outposts in Kensington, Clapham, Stoke Newington, Camden, Fulham and Richmond. In fact everywhere you’d expect. And that’s because it’s a total mecca for anyone who’s vegan, veggie or healthy. That and rich, because you’ll spend a premium on the products they supply. However, it’ll be well worth it.
Where: 20 Glasshouse Street, Picadilly Circus, W1B 5AR
