The Best Ice Cream Sandwiches

8th July 2015 | By Charlotte Knight

The ice cream sandwich is undoubtedly one of the capital’s biggest food trends this summer. And the humble childhood classic is being jazzed up left, right and centre by different restaurants, food vans and pubs, offering an array of different flavor ice cream and biscuit combinations. We’ve been on the hunt for the best 5 out there so you don’t have to trawl the streets in this humid heat – you’re welcome.

Dickie Fitz

All-day British dining room

Nestled on a busy corner in the heart of Fitzrovia, Newman Street Tavern has recently launched a take-away window, serving coffee and bacon rolls in the morning through to hand-picked Devon crab rolls for lunch. And now they’ve added a delicious ice cream sandwich to the mix; available all day – should it take your fancy for breakfast – Newman Street’s Viennese inspired creation is a combination of homemade English strawberry ice cream and buttery vanilla Viennese biscuits. And it’s available until Sunday 5th July so make sure you stop by this weekend.

Blutop

Ice cream sandwich specialists

The guys at Blutop only offer one thing from their street-food van: ice cream sandwiches. Their ice cream is handmade in small batches in their Battersea kitchen using only 6 all-natural ingredients, while their cookies are hand-baked in-house every week. Expect flavours such as bourbon whiskey old fashioned and coconut and black cherry ice cream with double chocolate and brown butter choc chip cookies. They also have salted pretzels, Golden nuggets and other interesting toppings to stud the ice cream with… tuck in!

Selfridges

Luxury ice cream sandwiches while you shop

These bad boys are exclusively available from the Selfridges outpost of the luxury gelato chain. Made from Snowflake’s delicious range of gelato – think sea salt caramel, pistachio, cashew milk and maple syrup – the sandwiches will be served in either classic Italian wafers or indulgent toasted brioche buns. And like Blutop, they’re offering a selection of extras to top it off; we like the sound of chocolate curls and gianduja (a sweet Italian chocolate spread).

Princess Victoria

Ice cream sandwich spins on classic desserts

The Princess Victoria boasts a quaint outdoor garden, themed this year around quintessential English summertime, perfect for sitting back and enjoying one of their yummy ice cream sandwiches with a G&T on the side. Their head chef Matt Reuther has come up with two servings, both inspired by afternoon tea-favourites: carrot cake, with a homemade cream cheese ice cream; and strawberry shortcake, with homemade English strawberry ice cream. And we’re told they’re working on a sticky toffee pudding version to celebrate the pub’s best selling dessert… Watch. This. Space.

Yum Bun

A steamed bun spin on the classic

Known for their unctuous pork belly, chicken and shrimp steamed buns, The Handbook first tried Yum Bun’s sweeter spin on the Korean classic during their residency at Haggerston’s Hawker House over the winter. The light, fluffy, delicate buns sandwich two really scrummy sweet fillings: choose from coconut ice cream with miso butterscotch and peanut praline or coffee ice cream with condensed milk (our favourite) both served in golden deep-fried buns. They’re at Street Feast’s summer outpost, Dinerama, Wednesday through Sunday – be careful if you live or work nearby – they’re addictive!
