Believe it or not this Saturday sees not only World Cocktail Day but also National Hummus Day. Not ones to skip a celebration, you’ll find us celebrating with cocktail in one hand, pitta in the other. And once those are consumed we’ll be heading over to Shoreditch for Balance Festival; HIIT, yoga and healthy food all under one roof. There’s also a beer festival, al fresco banquet and chocolate sauce on tap ready to pour onto your ice cream. Read on and find out where…
World Cocktail Day
Where better to celebrate World Cocktail Day than at the bar of The World’s Best Bartender? Dandelyan at Mondrian London have created a menu especially for the occasion, available until Sunday. We like the sound of the Silk Road Fizz, made with their own Dandelyan Mix (elderberries, mango and vodka) with lime, pineapple and chickpea water all topped up with Champagne. Chin-chin!
Limited edition cocktails available until Sunday 14th May
We love a collaboration. The May Fair Hotel boasts a partnership with the V&A so you can inject your London stay with a dose of culture while you’re at it. Starting this weekend, guests who stay at the hotel can choose their Pink Floyd package which includes 2 tickets to The Pink Floyd Exhibition: Their Mortal Remains over at the V&A as well as breakfast in the hotel and a bottle of pink Champagne waiting for you in your room on arrival. Go all out and request the pink Schiaparelli Suite. Well, pink is the colour of the moment…
Saturday 13th May – 1st October 2017
Where: Stratton Street, Mayfair, London, W1J 8LT, United Kingdom
Nearest station: Green Park (0.2 miles)
We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: here at The Handbook, we’re all about balance. Whether that means green juice in one hand, red wine in the other or salad for main, brownie for pudding we don’t like to specify but this weekend you can achieve your inner yin yang over in Shoreditch. Balance Festival is returning for another year, offering everything from HIIT, yoga and triathlons to cooking demos, cocktails and spa treatments. Yep, we said cocktails…
Friday 12th – Sunday 14th May
A Reading of Wind in the Willows
This summer the London Palladium will be home to a new musical, Julian Fellowes, George Stiles and Anthony Drewe’s reimagining of The Wind in the Willows. To celebrate, Julian Fellowes will be at the Haymarket Hotel hosting a rare and exclusive reading – it’s a chance to leave London behind and escape on an adventure with Mole, Ratty and Toad. Afterwards there’ll be a Q & A as well as afternoon tea at the hotel, because to accompany the reading they’ve created a special Wind in the Willows afternoon tea. It has perfect Sunday afternoon written all over it.
Tickets include a welcome drink, afternoon tea and a copy of The Wind in the Willows to take home.
Sunday 14th May (the tea will also be available 16th June – 9th September)
New Spring Cocktails
As the temperatures get warmer, our drinks get cooler. Just as well then that the neighbourhood bar group that includes No 11 Pimlico Road and No 32 The Old Town have spruced up their cocktail menu accordingly. Saturday is also conveniently World Cocktail Day so sip the Sipsmith-infused Summer Tonic, made with fresh kiwi and strawberry or a refreshing new Rhubarb Julep.
Available all weekend
One of the world’s best known liqueurs is teaming up with one of London’s most luxurious hotels. Drambuie are launching a collaboration with The Bar at The Athenaeum and the result? A suitably impressive sounding cocktail: The Navigator. Made from Drambuie 15 Year Old, Rinomato Aperitivo and East Imperial soda water, the cocktail is garnished with a twist of grapefruit and served in a highball glass. It’s aromatic, warming and refined.
Available until the end of 2017
Where: 116 Piccadilly, Mayfair, London W1J 7BJ, United Kingdom
Nearest station: Hyde Park Corner (0.4 miles)
National Hummus Day
Have you heard? Saturday is National Hummus Day – yep, that’s an actual thing. Celebrate in authentic Middle Eastern style at Exmouth Market’s Berber & Q Shawarma Bar. The restaurants’s Co-Founder and Head Chef, Josh Katz, has created a menu of 7 special hummus dishes, available for one day only; think hummus topped with ground sumac lamb, pine nuts and pomegranate, and Iraqi hummus made with amba, aubergine and egg. You’ll be searching for pita to mop up every last mouthful.
Saturday 13th May
Fully Immersive Beer Festival
Beer lovers will find themselves in Dalston this weekend, where Brooklyn Brewery is hosting the Beer Mansion, a fully immersive world of beer, food, art, games and entertainment. The ‘Mansion’ consists of 5 beer-filled rooms, each showcasing a different flavour profile of the drink, be it fruity and tropical or deep and toasty, to encourage you to really taste what you are drinking. Local names will be there too, including Redchurch Brewery (Bethnal Green) and 40 ft Brewery (literally down the road), with pizza from Voodoo Ray’s.
Friday 12th and Saturday 13th May
Sunday Lunch, Deliciously Ella Style
Deliciously Ella is joining forces with eco-chef Tom Hunt to cook up two Sunday banquets. Taking place at the Deliciously Ella Garden & Deli in Broadgate, the lunch will make the most of seasonal British produce. Things get underway with a Bloody Mary, before sharing platters are served, these include creamy wild garlic and butter bean puree; freshly baked spelt sourdough; black rice salad with pistachios, raisins and piquillo peppers and for pudding a glazed rhubarb sponge cake with coconut yoghurt, followed by raw chocolate truffles.
Sunday 14th May
Ice Cream and Chocolate Sauce on Tap
Over at Borough Market lurks a gelateria who really push the boundaries. Gelateria 3BIS are celebrating turning five in style, with a whole range of adventurous new flavours, inspired by their neighbouring market traders. Try their parmesan gelato with black pepper, toasted bread, pachino tomato and a drop of balsamic vinegar or play it a little safer with their special birthday flavour; bread and hazelnut chocolate spread gelato, made with bread from Bread Ahead. Be sure to try their new chocoshots too – gelato served in chocolate-coated wafer cups topped with warm hazelnut chocolate sauce, poured straight from the tap!
Al Fresco Yoga
Take your exercise outdoors this weekend. Sunday marks the launch of lululemon’s complimentary yoga sessions, #YogaontheSquare, which take place on the grass by Duke of York Square. Rock up, bring your mat and release your inner zen. The sessions are free to attend, suitable for all levels and you don’t need to book. Win, win.

Head over to Bermondsey this weekend and be one of the first through the doors at Pique-Nique, the new rotisserie-focussed restaurant from the people behind nearby French bistro, Casse-Croûte. Book Ahead: Gin Tasting
Take part in an intimate gin tasting at one of Shoreditch’s newest bars (but oldest buildings – it’s a 19th Century police station). TT Liquor is hosting a range of masterclasses, each focusing on a different spirit, but next Friday is the turn of gin. Guests will enjoy a cocktail on arrival before tasting their way through gin’s past and eventually creating your own bottle to take home with you.
