OK so we may have to wait until August for another bank holiday but that doesn’t mean we’re any less efficient at cramming our weekends full of brunches, cocktails, rooftop BBQs and sky high fitness classes. Read on to see how to spend your precious two days off…
What: BBQ Thursdays
Why: You may or may not be aware that this week is National BBQ Week (as if we needed an excuse) but if your landlord won’t allow glowing coals then you might want to let top chef, Adam Rawson, do the cooking instead. He’ll be at the newly opened Brixton Beach for one night only on Thursday to launch a new weekly series imaginatively titled “BBQ Thursdays on the Beach”. The event is free to attend but order a food token in advance and guarantee your chance to try his Cubano Medianoche burger, pina colada ceviche and spiced fries with mojo verde.
Thursday 1st June
Where: Brixton Beach, Pope's End, Brixton, SW9 8JH
What: Four Course Brunch
Why: Brunch is our favourite, but a four-course brunch? Well that’s a whole new level. A level that Theo Randall is reaching with the introduction of his La Dolce Vita weekend brunch that starts this Saturday. Translated as The Sweet Life, the brunch isn’t your usual avocado on toast, instead you’ll find cured meats and cheeses, handmade pasta stuffed with slow cooked veal and Theo’s signature Amalfi lemon tart. You can of course add bottomless Prosecco or Bellinis too. If it’s breakfast you’re after then there is also a new a la carte menu which features Italian classics such as St Ewe Cornish free range eggs with zucchini, creamy caprine fresco cheese and marjoram herbs.
Saturday 3rd June and then every Saturday and Sunday for brunch and throughout the week and weekends for the breakfast.
Where: InterContinental London Park Lane, One Hamilton Place, Park Lane, W1J 7QY
What: Trailer Parks and Cocktails
Why: In a city full of terraces and rooftops, we’ve found something a little different, a trailer park. Yep a trailer park in Hackney Downs where you can eat street food, play table tennis, listen to independent record labels and DJs and most importantly drink cocktails for just £5 each. It’s brought to you by Our/London Vodka and takes place at their distillery. Launching this weekend, things get underway with food from Andrew Clark and the Black Skulls collective and later in the month you’ll find Zoe Adjonyoh from Zoe’s Ghana Kitchen cooking up West African dishes. Terraces who?
Saturday 3rd June and then every Saturday throughout June, July, part of August and September dates being announced soon.
Where: Our/London Vodka Distillery. Spurstowe Road Hackney E8 1LS
What: BBQ by the Thames
Why: If you didn’t know, this week is National Barbecue Week and the weather has actually been pretty good – well done, high fives all round. Celebrating are D & D London who are holding a week of Thames-side barbecues, so you still have time to go this weekend. Taking part are Blueprint Café, Butlers Wharf Chop House, Cantina del Ponte and Le Pont de la Tour. Dishes include the likes of whole grilled Dover sole with Béarnaise sauce, Moroccan-spiced lamb chops and onglet steak with chimichurri. We don’t want to put your BBQ skills down, but we reckon the food and views are both going to be better than if you stay at home.
Available now until Sunday 4th June
What: A Taste of the Deep South
Why: If you’re wondering what exactly Noshville is, let us enlighten you – it’s what happens when KERB brings together eleven deep south music with the Suffolk-based Maverick Music Festival and puts it in Granary Square for two days. In short, it’s two days of Americana food, drink, live music and games. Food comes from the likes of Anna Mae’s who has created a Big Mac mini burger loaded with mac n cheese; Vicky’s (deep south) Donuts which are filled with snickers, glazed with maple pecan and injected with lemon meringue pie (not all at once don’t worry, they are three separate donuts) and Taco Dave’s crunchy nut buttermilk fried chicken with habanero jelly and bourbon glaze smashed maple candied bacon tacos. Games include a hot dog eating competition (if you can eat more) and music comes from the likes of Jonas and Jane and Pepe Belmonte.

Why: This June will mark the Queen’s Sapphire Jubilee – that’s a whopping 65 years on the throne – and we will be celebrating in true regal style at The Savoy’s American Bar. Head Bartender Erik Lorincz has created five new cocktails for the occasion, each inspired by royal events like the birth of Prince George to the wedding of Charles and Diana. We like the sound of the Sapphire Jubilee Fizz the most; Star of Bombay gin, Oleo Sacharum, Violet Liqueur, Pineau de Charentes and Champagne. And yep, it’s blue.

What: Good Old Fashioned Fun
Why: Once upon a time, street parties were a regular occurrence but nowadays, the only thing that can really stop the traffic is the Queen’s Golden Jubilee. Wandsworth Town (home to The Handbook HQ) is closing its high street to cars this Sunday in what we like to think is an ode to HRH’s Sapphire Jubilee. All you really need to know is that there’ll be live music, performances from local children and food from local traders served out on the streets. You’ll find us lingering by BBQ experts Meat Up.
