The Weekend Edit: How To Do This Season’s 1960s Trend

20th October 2022 | By Astrid Carter

From Mary Quant’s scandalous mini skirts to the ladylike chic of Jackie O and the paired back cool of Françoise Hardy, the 1960s were a wild, fast-moving and varied fashion decade. This season they are back, with high-end collections like Gucci, Khaite and Alix Pinho taking the reins, as well as high street brands such as Zara, M&S and COS offering up their affordable iterations. Scroll on to shop our favourite swinging ‘60s looks for 2022.

While 1950s fashion was all about ladylike two-pieces, cinched-in waists and Dior’s ‘New Look’, by the time the ‘60s had swung around women were ready for something revolutionary. The decade had plenty to offer in inspiration, from Carnaby Street’s vibrant boutiques to the British music scene – the Beatles, The Stones and Hendrix to name just a few – to America’s free love and hippy movement. Even the iconic moon landing inspired young people’s sartorial choices in the form of glittering chainmail and sci-fi-esque silver lamé. Hemlines got shorter, boots bigger and a kaleidoscope of colour and print hit the rails of some of the era’s biggest stores, from Biba to Ossie Clarke.

2022 sees a sartorial return to the iconic decade, and you don’t have to go head-to-toe ‘60’s to work the trend. Pick key pieces to tie in with your wardrobe’s foundations like a boxy peter pan collar jacket or coquettish Mary-Janes paired with a classic white shirt and denim. Or keep it simple and monochromatic with a timeless black polo neck or Beatnik-inspired stripes with a black mini and baker boy hat. On the high street, check out Zara and H&M for cute pinafore dresses and ‘60’s-inspired accessories, whilst if you’re after an investment piece, Gucci’s Horsebit Leather Bag has Christmas wish list written all over it – just one of the best new-season leather pieces to buy now.

If colour is your thing, there’s plenty of it here – look to off-beat, slightly faded colours like moss green, rusty oranges or deep purple. We love & Other Stories’ Voluminous Sleeve Mini Dress with pussy-bow collar – a great alternative to an LBD this party season -while COS’s Pleated Wool Dress is the perfect daytime frock to layer over a creamy high-neck knit and chunky knee-high boots.

And while the ‘60s are a key trend for AW22, the look remains a classic, in fact it never really fully goes away – just look at the likes of model Alexa Chung, influencers Emmannuelle Koffi and Whinny Williams, or musician Louise Verneuil who all regularly return to the aesthetic. It’s also worth following Insta accounts @60sgoodtimes and @sixtiesdaily for a ‘60’s smorgasbord of fashion, music and film.

Whether your style veers towards eclectic and loud or something a little more prim and proper, the ‘60s has plenty of takeaways to inspire your Autumn/Winter wardrobe this season.
