True crime fans, listen up: the latest season of AMC’s riveting true docu-crime series, True Crime Story, is coming soon. In the same vein as shows like Mind Over Murder and Burden of Proof, the series takes deep dives into real cases with the usual fare- shocking murders, frustrating red herrings and shifty suspects.

With the first season available on Amazon Prime, this new season, subtitled Citizen Detective, takes a look at the ever-growing craze of everyday people deciding to pick up a magnifying glass and become an amateur sleuth, with varying results.

What is True Crime Story: Citizen Detective about?

With the succinct tagline “When the law ends, they begin”, Citizen Detective brings you face-to-face with ordinary citizens who happen to be amateur investigators. They’re not running a private detective agency or working for Interpol; they’re just armed with a laptop, endless evenings of Googling and a nagging need to solve a mystery.

Each episode takes on a different individual (or sometimes a group of several people) and the cases that make them wrack their brains. It’s often one case in particular that keeps them up at night trying to find answers that elude them. They’re interviewed in detail as they explain the ins and outs of each mystery and how they juggle it with other work and their personal life. It’s not just the criminal’s motive that pulls you in here, it’s the detectives themselves and their obsession with the truth.

What else do we know?

Not much has been given away about the cases featured in the series, with a bigger emphasis on the “citizen detectives” themselves. We do know though that episode one deals with a case involving four unidentified bodies being found in barrels in the woods, with a woman with a troubled past of her own seeking to find closure in bringing the victims to justice.

The next episode centres on a curious case of a young man who suddenly died while riding his bike- and his mother and sister don’t believe the witness’ claims that he simply fell off, and decide to investigate themselves. It’s a common theme through the season, with family or friends attempting to solve what police couldn’t, at any cost.

Is there a release date?

The series is currently airing on AMC in the US, but it is set to be available at a later date in the UK. Meanwhile, you can go back and watch the first 14 episodes of True Crime Story on Amazon Prime through Sundance Now.
