The Morning Show

If you’ve not yet seen Apple TV+’s hugely watchable drama The Morning Show, then you’re definitely missing out. Amongst other hits on the streamer like Hijack and Shrinking, The Morning Show stands out, mostly because it was Apple’s first major TV effort.

Starring Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon (both quite far away from their usual roles), the smartly written drama goes behind the scenes of morning news shows, depicting the constant rows and presenters vying for the limelight. It’s currently in its third season, so if you want to catch up, we’re here to bring you up to speed on one of the best shows on TV.

What is The Morning Show and why is it worth watching?

The Morning Show

Morning news shows certainly seem like a mundane affair: summing up big news events, quirky local stories, and of course the weather- but it turns out, it’s pretty cut-throat. Loosely based on the book, Top of the Morning: Inside the Cutthroat World of Morning TV, The Morning Show takes a satirical look at what goes on behind the scenes of one of America’s top morning news programmes.

The network and presenters are fictional of course, but what is portrayed isn’t far from reality. Aniston plays Alex Levy, one of the UBA network’s best presenters and popular with viewers. Witherspoon plays the younger but ambitious Bradley Jackson, her co-host, and both are prone to envy each other.

Alex is dealing with the loss of co-anchor Mitch (Steve Carell ), who was sacked in the show’s first episode for a sexual harassment allegation, and Bradley is her replacement. Things aren’t helped by Bradley’s appeal to audiences, and Alex becomes increasingly worried she’s being written out of the picture. The first season mostly centres on the fallout from the harassment accusation and the host’s efforts to keep the show running smoothly. Season 2, meanwhile, now feels like an odd throwback of sorts—it’s set in the midst of the COVID pandemic, as Alex and Bradley’s relationship continues to be tense.

What happens in Season 3?

We won’t reveal what’s gone on in season 3 so far, but if you’ve seen the previous 2 seasons, it deals with Alex and Bradley fearing that they’re both about to be given the boot, as the UBA network is apparently in danger of a hostile takeover from a tech billionaire (played by Mad Men’s Jon Hamm ). As the stakes are raised even higher, the UBA team must band together, even if it results in some unexpected alliances.

When can I watch it?
