Idris Elba’s Thrilling New Apple TV Series Is One To Watch
If you keenly watched Idris Elba’s return as Luther in Fallen Sun earlier this year, you’ll be excited to learn that the star is set to appear in another thriller this year.
Created by Lupin writer George Kay, the Hijack series sees Elba play a man desperately trying to secure the safe release of himself and the other passengers aboard his flight when it’s suddenly hijacked. Set to debut in June, Apple has recently released some first-look pics and details.
Here’s everything we know about the Hijack series
Coincidentally following a similar premise and format to BBC One’s upcoming thriller series Nightsleeper, Hijack follows a flight of a plane from Dubai to London as it comes under attack by hijackers. It follows an hour-by-hour real-time format: seven episodes for the seven-hour flight.
Elba plays Sam Nelson, a man who’s excelled in the business world due to his biggest strength: the art of negotiation. Faced with a band of criminals holding the flight to ransom, his skills in brokering deals certainly seem ideal for the situation. But dealing with people that potentially want to kill you is on a different level to business negotiation, and Sam is forced to navigate a tricky balancing act to ensure the safety of himself and everyone else onboard.
As Sam pushes himself to step up to the task, will he be able to get a peaceful resolution? Or will his attempts lead to catastrophe?
Starring alongside Idris Elba in Hijack is Archie Panjabi (Snowpiercer, The Good Wife) who plays counterterrorism officer Zahra Gahfoor, whose team is assigned to the investigation and attempts to end the hijacking on the ground. Christine Adams (The Mandalorian), Max Beesley (The Midwich Cuckoos), Eve Myles (A Very English Scandal), Neil Maskell (Bull) and Jasper Britton (Here Comes Hell) also star.
The series is directed and written by Jim Field Smith (Truth Seekers, Litvinenko) and is from 60Forty Films, the company behind Slow Horses and The Essex Serpent.
Hijack is set to debut on 28th June, and like other Apple TV+ shows will release its first two episodes simultaneously, with the rest following across the next few weeks. There’s no trailer yet, but we’ll keep you updated when Apple drops it.
