Remember Bird Box? Netflix’s surprise horror hit took the internet by storm in the days before Wednesday and Squid GameIt instantly became the platform’s most-watched film at the time, and while the Bird Box mania may have faded away after a few weeks, it’s set to resurface. A follow-up has been in the works for years and will finally see the light of day as Bird Box: Barcelona lands this July.

Bird Box: Barcelona is a localised spin-off of the original film, featuring Spanish actor Mario Casas (Three Steps Above Heaven) in the starring role.

Here’s everything we know about Bird Box: Barcelona

Given it’s been a while since the film debuted, you might need a refresher on the Bird Box premise. In a post-apocalypse world, evil entities exist that will kill you if you look at them. To protect themselves, survivors (eg Malorie, played by Sandra Bullock in the film) must wear blindfolds and adapt to navigating the world without seeing. That basic setup returns for Bird Box: Barcelona, with a new group of survivors living in the city and trying to ensure they don’t meet an unpleasant end.

What can we expect? Well, there are few plot details available from Netflix at the moment, but the announcement trailer gives some insights. It looks like the action is set at least in part at the beginning of the apocalyptic event that precedes the film, and how it affected Spain.

There are some callbacks to the original film, like a bird in a cage and a woman smashing her head against a window. Unfortunately, there’s not much else to go on except for a lot of apocalyptic chaos, and a couple of shots of Mario Cases in action.

Bird Box: Barcelona will be almost entirely in the Spanish language, with a new group of characters (including the unnamed lead character played by Casas) and new problems. Netflix intends this to be the first of a series of localised Bird Box spin-offs, similar to Citadel, with further countries and locations to be given the Bird Box treatment. The announcement seemingly came out of nowhere, but there’s not long to wait: the film is set to hit Netflix on 14th July, with no prior advertising. More details should be just around the corner, but for now its time to get excited about the return to the creepy world of blindfolded terror.
