Four years after the end of its fifth series, the crime thriller Luther is finally making a comeback in film form. It’s been in development for some time now and will see Idris Elba return to the role of veteran investigator John Luther – and this time he isn’t confined to London. The film is set to hit Netflix next year in March, and the first images were finally released by the streamer in the past few days.

The film might only be a few months away, but right now there are not a whole lot of plot details to go on; much is still being kept under mysterious wraps. But what is known is that Luther will face a double threat in this new story, which picks up where Series 5 left off, with two new villains joining the fray. Actress Cynthia Erivo (The Outsider, Harriet) plays one of them, also a detective, but who happens to be Luther’s rival and nemesis. Meanwhile, Andy Serkis will once again be bringing out his sinister side in a role as a more traditional criminal baddie who comes head to head with our hero. It’ll also see the return of Dermot Crowley as DSU Martin Schenk, and actor and former professional mixed martial artist Jess Liaudin in a yet-to-be-revealed role.

Elba, who’s been successful both in shows like Luther and The Wire and blockbusters like Thor, The Suicide Squad and Beast, has long supported the idea of Luther returning in a more cinematic form. Speaking to Empire magazine on the movie and the new images, he assured Luther fans that the film would stick to its roots: “It’s really dangerous when expanding from television to film to throw a lot of money at it, and for that moment to change the characteristics of the show… … we wanted to make sure that even though we had a bigger budget, we didn’t distort the parameters of Luther-land too much… …[but] we do amplify the action and do amplify the stakes.” Filming for the film began late last year, taking place in London and Brussels.

There’s no trailer yet, though one surely isn’t far around the corner, and more info and images will be revealed in the coming months. For now, though, get excited that a Luther film is finally a reality and that the detective will be back on our screens soon.
