It’s shaping up to be a good year for British TV: with upcoming shows like Joan, A Very Royal Scandal, and returning hits like Slow Horses. The BBC, meanwhile, is releasing their latest blockbuster series, Nightsleeper, on TV and streaming this week. It stars The Ipcress File’s Joe Cole and Killing Eve’s Alexandra Roach as two people caught up in a twisting thrill ride involving a hijacked train. Here’s all you need to know:

What is Nightsleeper about?

Nightsleeper is in a similar vein to shows like Apple TV’s Hijack starring Idris Elba. The Heart of Britain train service is travelling its standard Glasgow to London route, and everything seems to be going normally. But events onboard prove anything but- things are about to get bumpy. After a major incident- seemingly a cyber attack- the passengers onboard are trapped with no way to escape, and the now unstoppable train continues to what could be the final destination of everyone onboard.

No one is clear as to what exactly has caused things to spin out of control, with the government agency assigned to investigating it scrambling to find an answer. Has the train been targeted by a lone wolf attacker? Or is the culprit an outside, international threat? The attacker can only be identified by their elusive pseudonym, “The Driver”. One of the cyber security agency’s most brilliant employees, Abby (Roach) can contact one of the passengers (Cole) so the two can work together to stop impending doom and find out what’s going on, despite the fact they’ve never met. Can they really trust each other?

What else do we know?

Cole and Roach play our leads, but the cast also includes Sharon Small (The Bay), Alex Ferns (Chernobyl), James Cosmo (Jack Ryan), Katie Leung (Harry Potter) and Sharon Rooney (Barbie). The BBC recently unveiled the series’ first trailer, briefly introducing us to our main characters and their high-speed predicament. There’s also the suggestion that someone onboard is in on the plot, adding another element to the layers of intrigue. Nightsleeper will release all episodes on iPlayer on 15th September, as well as airing on BBC One from the same day.
