It’s been 5 years since Big Brother was last on our screens when it was cancelled by Channel 5, but the ultimate reality show was never going to stay dead for long… That’s right, a Big Brother reboot is happening.

The show returns for its 20th series and was teased at the end of last year’s series of Love Island and is promised to be a new reimagining of the classic format. A new series and cast of housemates to go with it will arrive later this year, with the series being produced for the first time by ITV.

What can we expect from the new Big Brother?

The Big Brother reboot comes 23 years after it was first aired at the dawn of the new millennium in 2000 and dominated headlines and pop culture- even Doctor Who parodied it at one point. But the show began to fall out of fashion since streaming became dominant and shows like Love Island have become more popular, so things are set to be shaken up a bit for the revival.

ITV wants the new reboot of Big Brother to capture a new generation of fans and particularly appeal to a younger demographic, and wants to recapture some of the glory days. Expect it to have the same basic format- a selection of housemates filmed over several weeks on camera vying to not get evicted- but with a new coat of paint.

Who’s presenting?

The two most iconic hosts of past series, Davina McCall and Emma Willis, have both ruled out returning to presenting duties, but expressed support for whoever takes the reins. After much speculation, ITV revealed that AJ Odubu and Will Best will present the show together. Both appeared on companion show Big Brother’s Bit on the Side back in 2013, and will co-host all 36 episodes.

What else do we know?

The housemates themselves haven’t been revealed yet, and the application forms to appear on the series are still open until the end of June. As always, the housemates will be carefully chosen and come from all walks of life and society, and the show is set for a six-week run. Old cornerstones of the previous series will return, like nominations, tasks and of course live evictions. The public will be able to vote and decide who’s crowned winner and snags the cash prize. The Big Brother House is set to be a brand new construction specially made for the new series, with an updated contemporary look.

When’s it on?

The release date is still “autumn 2023”, but ITV has said the show will air nightly on every day except. Saturday, with extended runtimes for the first and last episodes.
