New season, new beauty cupboard. September always feels like a reset. New routines, back-to-school chaos and, naturally, a good excuse to reassess my bathroom cabinet. Here’s what’s genuinely earned a place in mine (and my dog’s!) routine…
I’m always slightly suspicious of a serum that promises to do absolutely everything, but this has made a very convincing case for itself (even at this eye-watering price!) I particularly love the silky texture, the way it layers under my moisturiser and, most importantly, how plump and bouncy my skin looks afterwards. If your September reset involves making your skin look like you’ve had eight hours’ sleep when you absolutely have not, start here.
Milk Makeup has had a revamp and, as someone who loves a quick, easy makeup routine, I’m very happy about it. The brand’s whole appeal has always been that cool-girl, swipe-it-on-and-go approach, but the updated range looks and feels more polished. I’m particularly loving the effortless textures and buildable formulas, the sort of makeup you can apply in the back of an Uber without needing a mirror. Which is exactly why I always carry a Lip + Cheek stick in my handbag.
My hair has been through enough this summer, heat, holidays, chlorine, dry shampoo and approximately 47 applications of SPF around my hairline, so this new fragrance-free shampoo and conditioner arrived at exactly the right moment. It leaves my hair feeling properly clean without that squeaky, stripped feeling, while keeping it soft and manageable.
I never expected to include dog shampoo in a beauty edit, and yet here we are. One of my favourite fragrance houses has done a special collab with British pet-care brand, WildWash. It’s basically the canine equivalent of your favourite luxury shower gel, beautifully scented, gentle and ridiculously chic. My dog, Kugel, now smells considerably better than I do. Is it essential? No. Is it slightly extravagant? Absolutely. Do I love it? Also, absolutely. How can you not?
September is when I start paying serious attention to my hair again, and so this hair thickening serum has become a daily part of my routine. Recently, I’ve noticed my ponytail has mysteriously halved in size (thanks hormones), so I’ve been applying this award-winning serum consistently to help build density and keep my scalp healthy too. Praying for thick locks by Christmas.
Two brands I never expected to see together: SKIMS and Tangle Teezer. And yet, somehow, it works. The collab takes Tangle Teezer’s cult detangling technology and gives it that unmistakable Kardashian SKIMS treatment. It’s sleek, very bathroom-shelf-friendly and exactly the kind of everyday essential that suddenly feels much more desirable because it’s had a fashion makeover.
M&S Beauty’s Formula skincare range has had a clever revamp, designed around high-performance skincare without making you feel like you need a degree in cosmetic science to understand your routine. The standout for me is the new Ultra Peptide Serum, powered by peptides and an NAD+ booster (two trending ingredients) to support long-term skin health and reduce signs of ageing. I love that it delivers the kind of sophisticated ingredients normally associated with much more expensive skincare but keeps things straightforward. Plus, it punches way above it £29 price tag!
