Loved Succession and been a little glum since it ended? Looking for more dramas about the super-rich and powerful? Netflix’s newest series may be the answer: A Man In Full, based on the novel of the same name and starring Jeff Daniels (The Newsroom, Steve Jobs) follows a similar wavelength as the story of the Roy dynasty: it follows a real estate titan who’s on the verge of losing everything as his business empire begins to crumble.

What is A Man in Full about?

One of the biggest comparisons you can make about A Man in Full (other than Succession) is the apparent parallels to Donald Trump: Charlie Croker (played by Daniels) is a highly successful businessman and real estate mogul, used to getting his way and being the top dog- until he’s told that’s now basically bankrupt, and stands to lose everything. While it might seem like it’s just a satire of Trump (which it is in part), the series is based off the 1998 novel by author Tom Wolfe, known for his acclaimed books like The Bonfire of the Vanities and The Right Stuff. While that book was set in the late 20th century, Netflix’s show updates it to a contemporary setting. With his reputation taking a severe hit, and opportunistic foes looking to exploit his new financial misfortune, Charlie sets out to defend himself and his empire, whatever the cost.

Who else stars, and is there a trailer?

Jeff Daniels isn’t the only big name attached to the series though, with Diane Lane (Feud: Capote Vs the Swans) as Martha Croker, Charlie’s ex-wife who seems keen to get one over on her former husband and potentially make money doing so. Lucy Liu (American Born Chinese) meanwhile plays Joyce Newman, a beauty company founder who’s dealing with her own problems as she tries to keep her life and businesses together, and Tom Pelphery (Ozark) plays Raymond Peepgrass, a loan officer and former employee of Charlie who is happy to see his old boss fall- despite having a not entirely squeaky-clean record himself. You can get a taste of the drama by watching the trailer (linked below), showing the brazenly daredevil Charlie claiming “nothing can kill me” as he wrestles with a snake at his OTT 60th birthday party- while simultaneously cutting to the meeting in which he’s told he’s bankrupt and stands to lose it all.
