We all love a gripping BBC drama- and if you’re looking to fill the void when Happy Valley sadly finishes up in a few weeks, this upcoming legal show might be just what you’re looking for.

Starring Bad Sisters’ Sharon Horgan and The Sandman’s Michael Sheen, Best Interests will tell the story of a married couple fighting for the right for their daughter to continue getting treatment, despite the advice of doctors that it would be in the best interests to let the child die.

Mirroring several high-profile real-life cases in recent years, the show is written by Jack Thorne, whose previous work has included the BBC’s adaptation of His Dark Materials and the Enola Holmes films. Sheen and Horgan play married couple Nicci and Andrew who live with their two daughters, Katie, played by Conversations With Friends’ Alison Oliver, and Marnie, played by A Christmas Carol’s Niamh Moriarty. Life is challenging for the family, with Marnie’s life-threatening illness impacting her quality of life. The medical team who support her sadly conclude that the illness is such that Marnie has the right to die to prevent long-term suffering, but her family object and feel that she should be allowed to continue to live.

The tragic ordeal becomes a court case, with her family fighting a legal process against the idea that it would be more ethical for Marnie’s treatment to end. While Nicci and Andrew are forced to make difficult and devastating choices, so are the courts, as the question of who has the right to end a life hangs overhead. The first image for the series released by the BBC shows Sheen and Horgan in character as the parents grappling with the legal case, pictured outside what looks like a court and being pressed for statements by journalists.

Other cast members set to appear are Noma Dumezweni (The Undoing) as Samantha, Chizzy Akudolu (Holby City) as Mercy, Des McAleer (Hope Street) as Eddie, Mat Fraser (His Dark Materials) as Greg and Gary Beadle (Grantchester) as Frank. There is neither a trailer nor an official release date, but we do know that the series will be in four parts, and will likely air in the first half of 2023 on BBC One.
