The Handbook

Looking for an ice cream that sits somewhere between Carte D’Or and a freshly scooped gelato from the streets of Florence? We’ve handpicked London’s poshest ice creams you can buy from the supermarket (or a fancy food store), so good they will make you melt.

Oppo

Launched in 2014 by brothers Harry and Charlie, Oppo ice cream is all about giving customers a healthier choice of ice cream with all the flavour – each tub only comes in under 200 calories per half tub.

Thanks to their lower-cal USP (and we imagine a shed load of charisma), the boys gained investment pretty quick – tennis star Andy Murray even bought in – and the product was launched in Waitrose across the country and won a Great Taste Award just two years later.

The ice cream range is still fairly small including flavours such as Double Salted Caramel, Vanilla Pecan Praline and Raspberry Nipple (which raises money for CoppaFeel Charity), as well as sticks and frozen cheesecakes.

Charity has always been a big part of what they do and during lockdown the brand launched Oppo Delivered – ice cream delivery direct to your door with all profits going to NHS Charities Together and a free tub to give to your neighbour.

A proper Dragon’s Den type story with a whole lot of love and delicious ice cream thrown in.

Remeo

Ice cream, sorry gelato (they’re very particular about that) so posh it actually looks like a face cream. Inside these pleasing on the eye pots you’ll find a modern take on Italian gelato, made using the highest quality, environmentally conscious products in Italy.

Choose from the most booji of flavours, from Ecuadorian Chocolate to Pistachio Siciliano.

Available at Waitrose and other stores.

Hackney Gelato

If you live anywhere near Dalton, London Field, etc, you’ll be familiar with these little pots, usually spotted in the hands of hipsters walking around E5/E8 way.

The brand was founded by two bona fide chefs, Sam and Enrico, who cut their teeth working at the Michelin-starred Locanda Locatelli. They now make ice cream for a living (the dream) and damn good ice cream it is.

Shop the range of fun flavours like Bakewell Tart and Clotted Cream and Strawberries or go traditional with Madagascan Vanilla or Dark Chocolate Sorbetto.

You can also pick up a couple of scoops on the go or pile it atop a cone at one of their many gelaterias around the capital.

Available at Ocado, Wholefoods and local stores.

Grom

Considered one of the best ice cream shops in London (they also have outposts all over Italy and stores in Hong Kong, Paris and New York), gelato doesn’t come much better than this.

Their proper posh pots will make your freezer look like it belongs to a Stepford wife and the flavours will earn you brownie points with the whole family. Choose from cheek-pinching Lampone (that’s Italian for raspberry) to the most decadent, best and probably the only decent tiramisu ice cream you can buy in a tub.

Available at waitrose.com

MiiRO

Posh ice cream doesn’t have to come in a tub, MiiRO’s posh creations come in stick form, perfect for these hot days in the garden or at the park.

They are also 100% vegan, made with plant-based milks and 32% less sugar than another ice cream that looks pretty similar.

Choose from Salted Caramel, Chocolate Hazelnut or Peanut Butter. Yum.

Available at ocado.com and other local stores.

Booja-Booja

Sticking with the dairy-free theme, you may know Booja-Booja for their posh, no-dairy chocolates. While we’d quite happily devour a box of their truffles, summertime calls for something just as chocolatey but a hell of a lot colder. Enter their incredible range of ice creams, from fruity rippled concoctions to truffley topped delights – if Willy Wonka were a vegan he’d make these.

Available at Ocado and Waitrose
