Get ready for another eccentric murder mystery that’ll make you laugh as well as thrill you: Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, sequel to 2019’s Knives Out, hit cinemas this week before it debuts on Netflix in December.
The new film sees the return of Daniel Craig as Benoit Blanc the master detective with the over-the-top Southern US accent as he solves a brand new mystery in Greece, once again written and directed by Rian Johnson.
The original success of Knives Out was owed in part to its intricate story and the same directorial flair Johnson brought to films like Star Wars and Looper and episodes of Breaking Bad, and the character of Benoit Blanc was ripe for a sequel. You can likely expect much of the same in Glass Onion, with the same twists, turns, betrayal and comedic drama from the original. While the first was filmed in the atmospheric wooded countryside of New England, this new instalment was filmed on the island of Spetses, so there’ll be plenty of idyllic landscapes.
The other big reason for the popularity of the first film was its excellent ensemble cast, consisting of Hollywood A legends and up-and-coming stars. This new film also assembles an impressive list of actors for its characters, with Edward Norton, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr, Kate Hudson, Dave Bautista, Ethan Hawke, Janelle Monáe, Jessica Henwick and Madelyn Cline all joining Craig for the sequel. Norton’s character invites friends and professional peers to a private island in Greece, and from there the mystery begins.
Who’s going to be murdered this time? Will the mystery even be about a murder? Does the title being a Beatles song mean anything?
We do know the murder takes place during a murder mystery party, and that Craig’s sleuth wasn’t invited as part of the original guest list. The rest you’ll have to watch to find out.
