Dolly Parton is a global treasure, period. From her intoxicating refrains to her charitable generosity, she never fails to amaze fans with her chirpy attitude to life and outright kindness towards others. And last week saw news headlines in utter admiration towards the American sweetheart once more as it was revealed that she gifted $1million to Vanderbilt, the company who have created the Moderna Covid vaccine.
Back in April, when the Coronavirus pandemic was first raging across the globe, Parton announced she would be donating $1million – which approximately equates to over £750,000 – to the Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville. Like many medical centres around the world, it was one that was fighting against Coronavirus, trialling the Moderna vaccine, which is now shown to be approximately 94.6% effective.
When speaking to the BBC about the revelation that she helped to part-fund the effective Coronavirus vaccine, she explained feeling ‘very honoured and very proud’ to be part of the process.

Following the news, over the last week, a tweet by @Heronymus has been circulating explaining that Parton is a millionaire and not a billionaire because she openly keeps donating money. The tweet reads: “Let’s be clear: Dolly Parton is a millionaire and not a billionaire because she *keeps giving money away*. Being a billionaire is a MORAL FAILING. She gives away shockingly large amounts of money every year and is STILL RICHER THAN YOU AND I WILL EVER BE.”
The tweet now boasts over 315.1K likes and over 38.4K replies, so it’s clear others agree.

And donating to the vaccine isn’t the first time she’s won over the hearts of thousands – millions even. She’s the mastermind behind the Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library (clue’s in the name really), a book gifting program that gifts free books to children from birth to age five in participating communities within the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and Republic of Ireland. Through this project over 1.7milliion children around the world are registered and over 147million books have been mailed out to kids too. Which when you think about it is absolutely outstanding.
The Imagination Library was first launched back in 1995, inspired by her father’s inability to read and write, and now her program gifts over 1million free books every month to children around the globe. Incredible.
Another quirky trait in Parton’s quiver and life-story is that she also secretly helped to fund and produce Joss Whedon’s 90s supernatural series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. So without Parton, we wouldn’t be able to enjoy the kickass moves of Buffy and the scooby-gang dusting vamps all over Sunnydale. What has she not done!
There are countless more things we could have mentioned and that’s even without talking about her iconic country music career. She’s iconically sold over 100million records over her whole career, so you know, she’s not just your average folk.
The news of the Coronavirus vaccine is brilliant and it hopefully means we’re finally on our way to ridding the world of this pandemic.
