All We Know About The Legally Blonde Prequel, Elle

It’s been 25 years (!) since Legally Blonde first introduced us to Elle Woods and shot Reese Witherspoon to stardom, and now Amazon Prime is taking us back to the beginning with Elle, a prequel series set before the events of the original. Newcomer Lexi Minetree is our new Elle, who’s navigating her teenage years at high school, while Witherspoon serves as a producer. Here’s everything you need to know.
What is Elle about?
Set “long before she became an ambitious Harvard law student”, Elle takes place in the 1990s, as we meet the high schooler in her formative years. While this is a prequel that emphasises “how Elle Woods became Elle Woods”, the show makes no secret that it’s leaning into some of that iconic Legally Blonde imagery that’s stuck with us since: think cute dogs and plenty of pink. The series has been in the works for some time, and according to Amazon, it will chart Elle’s journey and the life experiences that shape her outlook.

Lexi Mintree, a newcomer and total unknown, is stepping into Witherspoon’s shoes and certainly looks like the spitting image of her predecessor in the first look pics. Witherspoon said of the casting: “Discovering Lexi Minetree and watching her step into Elle’s fabulous shoes has been one of the most gratifying experiences of my career.” But while we’ve got these glimpses into what to expect, Amazon hasn’t revealed too much more plot-wise, but confirms it’s a coming-of-age story that “captures the heart, confidence, and optimism that made Elle Woods an enduring cultural icon.”
Who else stars, and what else do we know?
The other big piece of info we know is that Amazon has already renewed the series for a second season before the premiere, meaning you can expect plenty of Elle Woods in the future. June Diane Raphael (Weapons) and Tom Everett Scott have meanwhile been cast to play Elle’s parents, Eva and Wyatt. No trailer has been released yet, but Elle will be arriving on Amazon Prime Video on 1st July this summer.
