All We Know About The Legally Blonde Prequel, Elle
Legally Blonde was a fave movie of many a millennial in the early 2000s (and has kept its popularity since), and now, over 20 years later, Amazon is revisiting Elle Woods and her bubbly personality in its new prequel series, Elle. Starring newcomer Lexi Mintree as Elle, the show will chart her early years before she became a law student at Harvard and upended everyone’s expectations of her. Out on streaming this week, here’s everything you need to know about the series:
What is Elle about?
According to Amazon’s official logline, Elle is set “long before she became an ambitious Harvard law student”, taking place in the 1990s, as we meet the high schooler in her formative years. Of course, this is a prequel that explores “how Elle Woods became Elle Woods”, but the show will still be leaning into some of that iconic Legally Blonde imagery that became a source of fashion inspo back in the 2000s: think cute little dogs, sunglasses and plenty of pink. Mintree’s Elle may be younger than Witherspoon’s Harvard student, but she’s still got much of the same personality and sunny optimism that made her stick in our long-term memories.
Mintree is also a newcomer and a virtual unknown, and has big shoes to fill as she steps into the role- though certainly looks like the spitting image of her predecessor in the first look pics and trailer. Witherspoon said of the casting: “Discovering Lexi Minetree and watching her step into Elle’s fabulous shoes has been one of the most gratifying experiences of my career.” But while we’ve got these glimpses into what to expect, Amazon hasn’t revealed too much more plot-wise, but elaborates that it’s a coming-of-age story that “captures the heart, confidence, and optimism that made Elle Woods an enduring cultural icon.” She’ll be dealing with friendships and first loves, as well as trying to get used to being an outsider living in Seattle, where her family moves at the start of the series.
Who else stars, and what else do we know?
Amazon clearly has a lot of confidence in the series, as it’s already renewed it for a second season before the premiere, meaning you can expect plenty of Elle Woods in the future. June Diane Raphael (Weapons) and Tom Everett Scott have meanwhile been cast to play Elle’s parents, Eva and Wyatt. Elle will be arriving on Amazon Prime Video on July 3rd, and you can get your first proper glimpse at the show and its 90s setting by watching the (very pink) trailer below:
