If you love period drama romance stories (who doesn’t?), then we’ve found the next new one to add to your watchlist. Set to land on Paramount+ this weekend, Fellow Travelers is the new miniseries starring Matt Bomer (Maestro) and Jonathan Bailey (Bridgerton) as two men who first cross paths in Washington DC and soon begin to fall in love.

Described as a “historical romance and political thriller”, the series takes us through several volatile periods in US history as our two leads defy the risks in their passionate relationship.

What is Fellow Travelers about?

Created by Ron Nyswaner (Philadelphia, My Policeman), Fellow Travelers is set in the 1950s and spans several decades of the mid-20th century. It introduces us to Hawkins Fuller (Bomer), a rich and charismatic Washingtonian who has a career working behind the scenes in the political centre of America.

Despite his outgoing nature and powerful status, he keeps himself to himself and avoids getting close to anyone, but the arrival by chance meeting into his life by young Tim Laughlin (Bailey) changes things.

Tim might not be as wise to the ins and outs of the world of politics as Hawkins, but he’s got plenty of idealism and religious faith, seeing the world through a more optimistic lens. The two begin to fall for each other and start a hidden relationship – McCarthyism is at its height and both know that they could be ostracised and worse for being gay.

What else do we know?

Most of the first look images and the teaser trailer have shown off 50s fashion with prim and proper suits and ties, but the synopsis promises that the miniseries will take us “through the Vietnam War protests of the 1960s, the drug-fuelled disco hedonism of the 1970s, and the AIDS crisis of the 1980s, while facing obstacles in the world and in themselves.”

Expect more period fashion and lavish sets, as the two men experience the ups and downs of their secretive relationship and the reactions and prejudices of those around them.

Who else stars?‌

Fellow Travelers is based on the popular 2007 novel by Thomas Mallon, which also got an operatic adaptation for stage in 2016. Showtime’s miniseries also stars Allison Williams (M3GAN), Jelani Alladin (Tick, Tick… Boom!), Linus Roache (Homeland), Will Brill (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) and Chris Bauer (Gaslit) as Senator McCarthy.

When is Fellow Travelers released?

The seven-episode series will debut on 28th October in the UK on Paramount+, with episodes released weekly.
