As a Beauty Editor, I’ve tested more fake tans than I care to admit. Mousses, mists, drops, waters, lotions, I’ve streaked, stained, and occasionally turned a worrying shade of orange in the name of journalism. But when it comes to everyday maintenance, gradual tan is where it’s at.

For me, the best gradual tanners aren’t about looking freshly returned from a two-week Caribbean holiday, they’re about creating that healthy, believable glow that makes your skin look brighter and your white linen wardrobe look infinitely more expensive. And most importantly, self-tan needs to be easy. If a product requires military-level preparation and a degree in blending, I’m not interested.

These are the gradual tanners I genuinely rely on, starting with the one that has become a permanent fixture in my bathroom cabinet.

The hero product

If there’s one gradual tanner, I recommend time and time again, it’s Gatineau’s Golden Glow Gradual Tan. In a beauty market saturated with tanning launches, this is the one I consistently return to because it’s almost impossible to get wrong. The colour is what truly sets it apart. Rather than delivering an obvious fake tan, it creates that elusive city-break glow.

The shade is incredibly natural. Not too golden, not too olive, and definitely not orange. Instead, it gives skin a healthy, softly bronzed warmth that looks entirely believable.

Why I love it

The multi-award-winning formula feels more like a luxurious body moisturiser than a tanning product. It glides on effortlessly, absorbs quickly and never leaves behind that sticky residue that so many tanning products are guilty of. I can apply it before bed and forget about it completely.

The scent is another reason I love it. There’s none of the overpowering biscuit-like smell that often follows fake tan. Instead, it has a fresh, sophisticated fragrance that makes the whole experience feel much more skincare-led. It basically replaces my usual body lotion during the summer months.

What I appreciate most, however, is how forgiving it is. Yes, we’re all supposed to exfoliate beforehand and prep our skin perfectly. Can I always be bothered? No.  Yet somehow this formula still develops beautifully evenly. Even when I’ve skipped the body scrub and rushed the application, it manages to avoid patchiness and streaks. It’s genuinely one of the most foolproof tanning products I’ve ever used.

The result isn’t a dramatic tan. It’s simply better-looking skin. Healthier, glowier and more polished skin that gives you the confidence to bear your limbs when the sun unexpectedly makes an appearance. And frankly, that’s exactly what most of us want.

Other gradual tans that also deserve a shout out

The organic option

If you’re looking for a more natural formula, Evolve’s gradual tan is one of the best around. The colour develops softly and evenly, making it particularly good for fair skin or anyone who worries about overdoing it. It feels nourishing and hydrating, thanks to its skincare-focused ingredients, while still delivering enough colour to make a noticeable difference.

The membership favourite

Beauty Pie consistently overachieves when it comes to skin and bodycare products, and this gradual tan is no exception. The colour develops a little faster than Gatineau and delivers a slightly deeper result, which makes it ideal before holidays. Plus, it can be used on both your face and your body too. It still manages to look natural, but with a touch more impact and layers beautifully over consecutive days.

The luxury pick

Tan-Luxe has mastered the art of sophisticated tanning. This iconic product feels incredibly luxurious, almost like a premium body cream that just happens to contain tanning actives. The skincare credentials are excellent, and the finish is beautifully refined. If you’re someone who usually avoids fake tan because you dislike the texture or smell, this is the formula most likely to convert you.

The underrated gem

Organic and olive-oil infused. This brilliant gradual tan is a well-kept secret amongst beauty editors. If you’re looking for that deeper colour than a traditional gradual tanner, this is your go-to. The golden glow develops beautifully and never looks overdone, while the hydrating formula leaves skin feeling like you’ve used a super hydrating body lotion. I also love the subtle coconut scent, which feels far more luxurious and natural than traditional fake tan fragrances.

The face tan I swear by

Technically, this isn’t a gradual tanner, but can act like one. Instead, you add a few drops into your existing moisturiser, allowing you to customise the depth of colour. I’ve used these drops for years and still think they’re one of the smartest tanning products ever created. The result is fresh, healthy-looking skin rather than obvious tan, which is exactly what I want from facial tanning.

The classic

Some beauty products become classics for a reason. St Tropez’s gradual tan (the pioneers behind gradual tanning) remains one of the easiest, most reliable formulas on the market. The colour is consistent, the application is straightforward, and the result always looks natural. If you’re completely new to self-tanning, this, as well as my favourite Gatineau tanner, is probably one of the safest places to start.
