No one is more nostalgic for the 2010s than Lena Dunham, who has just announced through HBO, the revival of her beloved series, Girls. Breaking the news, in a classically unconventional – yet ever-so-Girls – manner, Lena Dunham broke the internet, simultaneously healing the hearts of girls everywhere, as the beloved stars joined a casual video chat to announce their return a decade later.

The news

Last night, the familiar faces of Lena Dunham, Allison Williams, Zosia Mamet, and Jemima Kirke took over our screens – this time on our phones – in the form of a video group chat. The topic of discussion? A reboot of Girls.

“We used to spend like every summer together, you know, doing this thing that we do, making this show,” says Lena, before asking the group if it’s “something that you would want to do again? Are you free next summer?” Once the group confirmed that they were, in fact, ‘in’, Andrew Rannells joined the chat and also approved of the pitch.

Lena asked the chat, ‘Are you free next summer?’ And was met with a resounding ‘yes’ from the famous lineup.

Fans took to the comments section to share their excitement for the news writing, “I’M INNNNN 😍😍😍”, “Not me checking my calendar to make sure it’s not April 1st I need help” and “The news the world needed 🎉 💃🏼”

About the new season

While this isn’t being called ‘season 7’, the new drop will consist of five episodes airing on HBO Max, due to arrive in 2027 – a whole decade after the season 6 finale.

Who stars?

Dunham will reprise her role as Hannah Horvath, reuniting with original cast members Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke, Zosia Mamet and Andrew Rannells. The revival will bring the original creative vision back to the screen, with further details about the storyline yet to be revealed.

Why a revival of Girls now?

The revival comes as Dunham turns 40, with the enduring affection of fans serving as a key inspiration for bringing the series back. An ever-shifting nostalgia from the 90s, 2000s and now to the 2010s, the return of Girls offers an opportunity to revisit a show that helped define a particular era of television, reigniting conversations on female friendship, ambition and the raw realities of coming of age.

About Girls

First airing in 2012, the series followed four millennial women in their early twenties navigating careers, relationships and the realities of post-college life in New York City. Created by and starring  Dunham as aspiring writer Hannah Horvath, the series became known for its unglamorous, unfiltered and unforgettably hyper-realistic portrayal of young adulthood.

Balancing satire with sincerity, Girls challenged conventional portrayals of women on screen, dissecting privilege, the ideal of the ‘pretty and perfect’ within the  isolation of growing up in the early 2010s. The dynamic between the women and raw portrayal of female friendship during its six-season run from 2012-2017 earned 19 Emmy nominations and two wins, including one for ‘Outstanding Casting’. Now, a decade after its 2017 conclusion, the series is set to return to revisit the generation whose growing pains it captured so carefully.
