You know Glen Powell from hit films like Twisters and Anyone But You– but now one of Hollywood’s biggest rising talents is moving into TV with his new show, Chad Powers. A sports comedy, it stars Powell as an American football player who, after falling afoul of his college team, creates an elaborate fake identity to make a comeback- and his career unexpectedly takes off. Here’s all you need to know:

What is Chad Powers about?

The comedy is set in the world of American football, and while we in Britain aren’t as familiar with the sport as across the pond, perhaps the show can pull a similar effect to Ted Lasso and increase interest in the UK. Russ Holliday (Powell) is a football quarterback for a college team but wrecks his career through his chaotic misbehaviour. Dejected and disgraced, Russ thinks his playing days are permanently over until he comes up with the idea of disguising himself as an entirely fake player who doesn’t exist.

Enter: Chad Powers, an affable and highly talented football player – an identity that Russ uses to win a position on a southern team and reignite his playing career. He even dons prosthetics while posing as his alter-ego, as he switches up his loud, brash personality to appear polite and genial. But given his ridiculous appearance and the fact that it can’t be too hard for anyone watching him to connect the dots, his long does Russ have until his real identity is discovered and everything comes crashing down?

What else do we know, and is there a release date?

Believe it or not, the show is based on a partly true experience of American football player Eli Manning, who disguised himself in prosthetics to try out for a college team in a TV documentary. Alongside Glen Powell, the cast is set to include Steve Zahn (The White Lotus), Toby Huss (MaXXXine), Perry Mattfeld (Shameless) and Colton Ryan (The Girl From Plainview). Powell is also co-writing the upcoming series for Hulu, and it’s set to debut in the US in September. A release date for the UK is unconfirmed, but will likely be available as with other Hulu shows on Disney+.
