What can be said about David Attenborough that hasn’t been already? The man who’s educated us all on the natural world and its wildlife for six decades has become a British institution. Ask his hologram!
Attenborough has been immortalised in hologram-form for everyone to enjoy and while it sadly won’t be like in Star Wars, where you can call him up to ask questions about the world and nature on a whim, you will be able to see him as part of a new AR experience in London.
Sir David will be guiding you in his hologram form through a brand new immersive experience that ties into his most recent show, Green Planet. The Green Planet AR Experience, Powered By EE 5G will allow visitors to immerse themselves in six digitally enhanced worlds, including deserts, rainforests, and fresh and salt water worlds.

You’ll also learn about why plants are so integral to the future of our planet, and what we can do to ensure it’s survival.
It’ll allow you to explore and learn about real world locations from the Amazon Basin to the South African Cape, as well as the various creatures that live in them. There’ll be a particular focus on plants- given the tie in to Green Planet. All the while of course, Sir David will be giving you facts and his inimitable narration.

All of this is being powered by AR smartphone technology, and you’ll be given a smart device with the app pre loaded on it when you arrive. The app will use 5G technology, in partnership with EE. The app is described by its creators as “Attenborough in your pocket”, and who wouldn’t want that? Minister for Digital infrastructure Matt Warman said that “is set to be an inspiring example of how new technology can reconnect us with the natural world while demonstrating the power of 5G to a huge new audience.”
Speaking on the new tech, app developer John Cassy commented “There is a whole hidden kingdom of plants in the green world that grow and operate at a pace not able to be seen by the human eye… …we are able to bring technology to the real world through the use of augmented reality.” The app is also being developed in cooperation with The Royal Botanical Gardens, so perhaps one day we’ll have Attenborough tours around Kew too.
The app is described by its creators as 'Attenborough in your pocket'...
In any case, it’s not known yet whether we’ll all be able to download Sir David’s new app (AttenboroughApp? Attenborough Go? Attenborough Prime?) on our iPhones in the future, but it seems possible. Having that calming voice on a whim would probably help us all calm down and chill out in our frantic modern world.
For the meantime though, you’ll be able to have a VR appointment with the legendary broadcaster from 11th February, until 9th March at The Green Planet AR Experience powered by EE 5G 55 Regent Street. As with a lot of educational stuff, the exhibition is totally free! So get booking to take an hour to absorb the wonders of our planet.
