A Canadian sports romance has become one of the buzziest new TV shows in recent weeks, lighting up social media- and now Heated Rivalry made its UK debut this weekend (10th January, 2026). Based on the book series Game Changers by Rachel Reid, it stars Hudson Williams and Connor Storrie as two hockey players who have a fierce rivalry on the ice rink, but off it, have a private and passionate romance. Here’s all you need to know…

What is Heated Rivalry about?

Heated Rivalry first premiered in Canada last November, before being snapped up for release in other countries due to its runaway success. It follows Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov, two hockey players – Shane is Japanese-Canadian and captain of the Montreal Metros, and Ilya is Russian and captain of the Boston Raiders. Both are star players, and during their matches against each other have begun a strong rivalry, amplified by media and fan obsession and speculation. But off the rink and away from the spotlight, the pair have actually started a passionate romance.

Their relationship begins casually, but soon becomes much more serious, and both learn to navigate their love and feelings. Simultaneously, the two deal with the pressures of growing fame due to their feats on the ice, as well as homophobia in the sporting world, and trying to keep their relationship secret.

The book series already had a sizeable fanbase, which has helped lift Heated Rivalry off the ground, but it’s caught fire on social media and has attracted millions of viewers. Some of it seems pretty simple, with good-looking leads, strong chemistry and acting (Hudson Williams and Connor Storrie are breakout stars), and a lot of steamy scenes that have helped create word-of-mouth that it’s an essential watch right now. But there are other elements too, like the fact that the writing means that Shane and Ilya’s relationship, which builds over a decade, can be fully formed and engaging. It’s also won praise for how it handles LGBTQ issues and masculinity, and in a way that is not as commonly seen on TV.

Where to watch in the UK

The show also stars François Arnaud (The Borgias), Robbie GK (Overcompensating), Christina Chang (The Good Doctor) and Dylan Walsh (Unforgettable). If you can’t wait to watch, the first two episodes landed in the UK this weekend on Sky Atlantic and via NOW.
