Netflix’s Rom-Com Thriller Hit Man Is Coming This Weekend

Netflix’s rom-com thriller, Hit Man, which stars Top Gun: Maverick and Anyone But You actor Glen Powell, is coming to your screen tomorrow.
The trailer shows Powell playing a college professor recruited to become an undercover police officer, who then poses as a hitman to carry out sting operations for the cops. In a sudden plot twist, in one mission, he comes across a woman in need of help (Good Omens‘ Adria Arjona), and suddenly everything changes. Having premiered last year, Hit Man will debut on Netflix tomorrow- here’s everything you need to know:
What is Hit Man about?
Hit Man is directed by Boyhood and Before Sunrise director Richard Linklater, and believe it or not is (loosely) based on a real story, reported in Texas Monthly back in 2001. Powell is Gary Johnson, a police officer and former straight-laced professor who finds he has a secret talent for impersonation. Using this to his advantage, he poses as a fake hitman to arrest people who would try to hire them. He’s good at his job and becomes a reliable asset for the cops, but he seems to meet his match in one client that he’s smitten by. Maddy (Arjona) meets Ron (the name of Gary’s hitman persona) and tries to hire him to use in a hit, but the two can’t resist becoming romantically entangled with each other.

This romantic liaison, of course, is a breach of protocol- but Gary is prepared to risk it all to help Maddy, and Maddy is equally taken by the charming man whom she’s hired. The film takes inspiration from the true story of Gary Johnson who did pose as a hitman for police in Houston- though Netflix’s press release makes sure to say that much of the plot of the movie is fictionalised.
Who else stars?
In addition to the lead pairing of Powell and Arjona, Hit Man will also star Austin Amelio (The Walking Dead), Retta (Parks and Recreation), and Molly Bernard (Younger).
The film has gotten positive buzz and reviews so far following its premiere last September and will drop on Netflix on 7th June.
