By the order of the Peaky Blinders (or rather, by Netflix)- a full-length feature film version of the hit gangster drama is finally coming to our screens. Long awaited and hoped for by fans, the Peaky Blinders film is officially greenlit and announced by Netflix, and will see Cillian Murphy return to the role of Thomas Shelby. It’s early days yet, but the sudden reveal lit up the internet with hype: here’s everything we know so far.

What do we know about the Peaky Blinders film?

Peaky Blinders as a TV series came to an end a few years ago in 2022, but creator Steven Knight had spoken about his ambitions to turn the show into a film the previous year. It was set to replace a seventh series of the show, but seemed up in the air until Netflix dropped the big announcement that it would be developing and releasing the film, alongside the BBC. Netflix has recent form with movie sequels to big hits like Breaking Bad and Luther, and it looks like they’re going all in for Peaky. Knight promised that the new film will be “no holds barred” and Netflix’s post on X/Twitter included a pic of the script.

The other big news is, as you’d hope, that Cillian Murphy, newly minted Best Actor Oscar winner for Oppenheimer, will be once again donning the signature flat cap to reprise his role as Tommy Shelby.

He might now be a true leading man in Hollywood (if he wasn’t already), but Murphy commented alongside the announcement: “It seems Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me… … it is very gratifying to be re-collaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of Peaky Blinders.” He also said “this is one for the fans”

It seems Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me… … it is very gratifying to be re-collaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of Peaky Blinders.

What Else Do We Know?

With Knight, director Tom Harper and Murphy onboard, the key elements are in place- but there’s not a lot else revealed yet. The working title glimpsed on the script is “A Peaky Blinders Film”, and you can assume the main cast (the ones with characters that survived) will likely be back, but there’s little else in terms of plot revealed.

When we last saw Tommy, he was heading off into the distance on a horse, having discovered that he didn’t have a fatal tumour as he thought, and looking for a new start in life. We’ll have to wait and see where he goes next.

Knight did tease that will be an “explosive chapter”, calling it “full-on Peaky Blinders at war”, and he previously noted that he’d like to take the story “into and beyond World War II”.

So, it should certainly be dramatic, and we might get some more clues once filming begins in Birmingham in September. We’ll have to wait and see where he goes next.
