The UK and France have always had a rivalry – but what happens when their two leaders are thrown together in a hostage crisis that threatens them both? Netflix’s new miniseries Hostage stars Suranne Jones (Vigil, Gentleman Jack) as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, while Julie Delpy (Before Midnight) opposite her as the French President.
When the husband of the Prime Minister is kidnapped and the President starts receiving blackmail, it’s all hands on deck to solve the crisis- but the two leaders find their normally cordial relationship strained. Here’s everything you need to know:
What is Hostage about?
Jones plays Abigail Dalton, the UK Prime Minister, who, when we meet her at the start of the series, is spearheading a major national campaign to put the NHS first as a priority. So important is the issue that she’s made it the focal point of her entire premiership – potentially leading to her downfall if she fails. She faces a severe obstacle, however, in the form of drug shortages, which is beginning to cause unrest in the country. Perhaps her best bet for solving things is her opposite number in France, President Vivienne Toussaint, who differs with her politically. Both nations decide to hold a summit that could prove pivotal to both of their futures.
But the summit is interrupted by serious news: Abigail’s husband is kidnapped while abroad in South America, and simultaneously, Vivienne is sent blackmail about a scandal she is involved in. Suddenly, the normal to and fro of everyday politics is upended when both leaders find themselves facing down the same threat. Abigail and Vivienne will need to put aside their opposing political beliefs and work together to manage and resolve the crisis- but with both at breaking point, it’s hard for them to avoid clashing as their relationship is tested. With both leaders’ time in office on the line, can they make an effective team?
