House Of The Dragon Is Finally Back On Our Screens
House of the Dragon is back on our screens later this month at last, after Season 2 aired all the way back in 2024. Season 3 of HBO’s epic series will continue to chronicle The Dance of the Dragons, the huge and world-changing civil war that rips through Westeros many years before the events of Game of Thrones, dividing Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) and Aegon II (Tom Glynn-Carney) and locking them into conflict.
What will Season 3 be about?
As Season 2 came to a close, the impending civil war began to finally break out into a full-blown conflict, with any hope of diplomacy dying away. Season 2 had its critics and was somewhat divisive, but anticipation for more Westeros means that there’s still plenty riding on this new instalment. The Dance of the Dragons is set to be the centre stage of this season, as it consumes everyone and changes things forever.
Rhaenyra continues to rule from Dragonstone and is still facing trouble from the Greens in King’s Landing. As the civil war rages and she tries to deal with everything befalling her, Rhaenyra becomes increasingly hardened, and there’s a tease that she’ll be going down “a dark path.” Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith), ever unpredictable, continues to be both her greatest weapon and her most dangerous liability, as his appetite for violence threatens to outpace strategy.
Season 3 will be adapting the novel Fire & Blood by George R R Martin, and judging by that book, you’ll need to be ready for devastating battles and an increasingly high amount of deaths. HBO has confirmed that things will be getting bloody and brutal right from the get-go, with the devastating Battle of the Gullet set to kick off the season’s events.
Alicient (Olivia Cooke), who’s been a standout character in the previous two seasons, will be getting an even bigger and more important role this time around, and she may yet still lose everything- it all hangs in the balance. The rest of the regular cast, like Rhys Ifans, Ewan Mitchell, Steve Toussaint and Phia Saban, will all be returning, too.

What else do we know, and is there a release date?
Ahead of the new season’s premiere, the first critics’ reviews have been trickling in: if the previous outing seemed divisive, it seems like Season 3 will be more warmly welcomed. Reviews have been strong, and there are all the indications that the action will be a lot faster-paced, too, so strap in.
