Many of us struggle with hair frizz all year round but when you throw heat and humidity into the mix, it’s a whole different level of frizz. Celebrity hairdresser Luke Hersheson explains “when it’s sticky, hot, and humid – moisture from the air makes its way into the hair structure, causing the cuticle to swell and become rough. This change is what lies behind that dry, bushy, fuzzy, out-of-control mess – the kind of frizz we don’t appreciate at all.” Thankfully there are easy tricks and innovative products that will keep hair looking smooth and sleek even when the temperature rises.

The Five Steps To Taming Frizzy Hair

Here, legendary hair stylist and luxury haircare founder, Sam McKnight reveals the five steps to tame frizzy hair in the heat no matter what your hair type.

Step 1: Prep

Taming frizz in the heat is all about lightly layering the right products. “I always start with haircare – the right shampoo and conditioner will give your hair the best foundation for styling,” claims Sam.

Step 2: Prime

A cream or balm into freshly washed damp hair, whether you are letting your hair dry naturally or blow-drying keeps frizz at bay. Sam says, “a great tip is to top it up with another application once dry to protect hair from fluff and frizz that can crop up in the heat.”

Step 3: Check ingredients

Look for ingredients in your products that are known to help hair retain moisture such as shea butter. It has incredible water binding properties, so hair retains moisture whilst also sealing the cuticle with a fine film without any greasiness. Perfect for frizz prone hair.

Step 4: Use the right styling tools

Are you creating frizz when styling? Sam strongly advises “to consider the tools you are using. Waves and curls, once dry, should not be brushed, it makes them fluffy and frizzy. Instead use a wide tooth comb to detangle.”

Step 5: Create control

For those flyways or that frizz that gives you a halo around your style, the best way to get them under control is to mist hairspray onto a soft bristle brush, a natural toothbrush is perfect (and a trick of the trade) and smooth over those pesky hairs. It’s the oldest trick in the book, but it works. Finish with a fine spritz of lightweight hairspray.

The Expert’s Frizz-Fighting Rulebook

The hair rules to follow as revealed by John Frieda Salons Creative Director, Zoe Irwin.

*Don’t rough dry hair with a towel, it causes more friction, instead use your fingers to comb through excess water.

* Use a deep conditioning treatment at least once a week.

* Don’t lather your hair while shampooing, instead smooth with the flat surface of your hand to avoid creating more friction which leads to frizz.

* Never skip on conditioner.

* Always brush your hair from the ends up if you need to detangle.

* Heat protector products is a must when heat styling hair.

* Don’t underestimate investing in a good hairdryer, it will keep your hair follicles smooth.

* Try not to flick or touch your hair throughout the day.
