Curls 101: 10 Ways To Take Care Of Curly & Textured Hair – According To An Expert

Navigating the world of curls is like finding the perfect dance partner – it takes a bit of trial and error. But once you’ve discovered that winning combo, there’s no looking back!
To ensure your curls are always stealing the spotlight – and under control, we spoke to Michele Scott-Lynch, founder of curly haircare brand, Boucléme, who reveals the dos and don’ts to owning your curls…
Use A Co-Wash To Tame Frizz
A co-wash is a cream-based conditioner cleanser that doesn’t foam (a bit like a cream-based face cleanser) it gently removes dirt and sebum but leaves strands nicely hydrated. Without it, hair lacks volume and shape.
Refresh Hair With A Curl Cream
If you get a little halo frizz or your curls start feeling dry in between wash days, try refreshing with a little curl cream for dehydration or a curl-defining gel to enhance definition. Spritz hair lightly with some water, smooth over the length and scrunch into your hair.
Make Gel Your Best Friend
If you’re going to buy just one product, then make it a gel. It’s perfect for smoothing and setting definition and a great product for both wash day and when you need a refresh.
Avoid Over Shampooing
Frizz is often caused by over-shampooing. Detergents will strip away much-needed moisture and create a foundation of frizz.
Leave Conditioner On Your Hair
After cleansing it’s important to hydrate your curls for definition to form. If your hair is dry and thirsty, I recommend leaving some or all of your conditioner in. You can apply your styling products on top to trap in the hydration and lock in moisture for longer.
Always Apply Your Styling Products To Soaking Wet Hair
Water hydrates hair and this slows down the evaporation process. The best definition comes from all that juicy hydration and your styling products, so remember to load up on your products before drying rather than after.
Use A Diffuser To Dry Hair
Use a diffuser on a low speed and medium heat. Everyone is unique so drying to 100% might work for some whereas only drying 50-80% might work better for hair that tends to lose moisture quickly. Air drying is also a great option in the warmer seasons.
Don’t Skip Weekly Deep Conditioning
An overnight hair treatment/mask can help to maintain good moisture levels in your hair and improve long-term hair health. Protect curls overnight and sleep on a silk pillowcase or wrap curls in a silk scarf.
Don’t Use Terry Towels
Your regular bath towels will suck out all the hydration. Try a smooth jersey that only absorbs excess water.
Read Product Labels
Avoid non-water-soluble silicones and petroleum-based ingredients. They can both build up on the hair and need strong detergents like sulphates to remove them. Sulphates are super drying to curls and create frizz.
