Call it the Kate effect, but when Mossy takes to the runway, the fashion world sits up. At 49 years old, Kate picks and chooses the shows she does and she’s notoriously honest about not being the biggest fan of live catwalk shows. So, when she took to the floor last year to showcase Bottega Veneta’s Spring/Summer 2023 collection in probably the most downplayed, nonchalant look ever, it was a ‘moment’.
That’s the thing about fashion, you can take something as nondescript as a lumberjack shirt and baggy jeans, put it on the world’s most iconic supermodel and suddenly you have the It-item of the season. As much as we love the simplicity of this look, the way it wistfully looks back to the grungy ’90s and the fact that it is genuinely really wearable, we can’t quite get on board with the price tag. In the throws of an economic crisis and the cusp of a recession rearing its head, £4,300 for a checked shirt isn’t only distasteful, but outright bonkers. It would be cost of living crisis or no cost of living crisis.

As always, the high street follows the runway so there are plenty of options to recreate the look on a more sober budget. Plus, there are so many great brands that do a classic plaid shirt as part of their standard collections – Rails, Good American, R13 – that are excellent quality, cool oversized shapes and wash really well.
