We might be starting to think about spring, but the recent cold snap and ‘thunder snow’ has us reaching for the blankets and hot cocktails again. So we’ve rounded up 9 winter terraces which opened in 2016 but are still around, so you can stock up on tartiflette, fondue and gingerbread afternoon teas for a little while longer.
A Caledonian Christmas
The Scottish Winter Terrace at The Rib Room Bar & Restaurant brings a taste of the Highlands to the city, in partnership with William Grant & Sons brands Glenfiddich and The Balvenie who have created some warming cocktails to go alongside tempting bar snacks. Keep an eye out for live music performances, tastings and masterclasses too.
Open until 25th January 2017
Although it began back at the end of November, The Goring’s Cresta Run bar is sticking round until February, long after the indulgence of Christmas worn off… Can’t make it to the Alps, or waiting for some proper snow, then you’ll want to head to Belgravia for hot cocktails, Swiss inspired canapés and vintage artefacts including photos of the actual Cresta Run (aka the oldest and most inherently dangerous ice skeleton racing toboggan track in the world) and outfits worn by daredevil participants.
Open until the end of February 2017
Hot Cocktails on a Rooftop Terrace
Madison is pretty much the go-to terrace for alfresco summer evenings in the city. But what about winter? Madison’s winter terrace comes with everything you would hope for; faux fur throws, hot cocktails and twinkling lights, but you’ll be pleased to hear the Christmas trees are no more.
Open until end of February 2017
Where: Rooftop Terrace, 1 New Change, St Pauls, London, EC4M 9AF, United Kingdom
Nearest station: Mansion House (0.2 miles)
A Winter Fairy Tale
Coq d’Argent is once again transforming its terraces into ‘Lodge d’Argent’, although this year it’s inspired by Little Red Riding Hood. Rustic wooden walls, fur blankets and the necessary heaters are made all the more authentic with warming cocktails and holiday favourites like raclette gratin and indulgent chestnut macaroons as well as a selection of Hennessey cocktails. Hopefully the Big Bad Wolf of Wall Street types stay away.
Open until 28th February 2017
Skye Halla Nordic Rooftop
This winter, Shield – Maiden Skye has pitched up at the Queen of Hoxton’s Winter Wigwam in her Nordic Viking long boat. She’s brought her band of noble savages with her as they celebrate their victorious battle with decadent feasting and plenty of mead in slurped from drinking horns. Join them at the banquet table for the likes of Týr’s Sloe Gin turkey leg and Hodhr’s Hotpot pork belly hot pot with apples, potatoes, herb, wild and smoked garlic. There’ll also be events taking place throughout the season including the art of etching and a braid bar. Let’s all raise a skål to the best food and wine this side of Ægir.
Open until the end of March 2017
Ski Terrace with Grey Goose Vodka
So you’re in London wishing you were skiing instead? We can’t get you to the mountains but we can tell you about the Courthouse Hotel’s winter terrace which is bringing the après to Soho. Having teamed up with Grey Goose you can warm up with Grey Goose cocktails such as the L’Orange which has a smoky orange flavour and the La Poire which has warming plum notes. Food will include smoky chorizo in red wine and piping hot sticky toffee. Pull up a pew in the snug fleece lined chairs and wrap up under a blanket, it might not be the Alps but it is London and it will be cold.
Open until February 2017
This winter, saw the return of York & Albany’s gingerbread cabin pop-up. Nestled in their Camden courtyard, the pop-up is decorated rather like Hansel and Gretel – the gingerbread house covered in sweets bit, not the creepy witch bit. They’re serving sweet and savoury sharing platters, gingerbread afternoon tea and moreish gingerbread cocktails – you’ve got until the end of February to get there!
Running until 28th February
Slopes of Soho
Now is the time for the phrase ‘winter is here so it’s time to hit the slopes of Soho’, what you don’t know it? It’ll catch on… Anyway, why are we saying this? Because Archer Street’s winter pop-up Piste is back. Hidden below their bar, the pop-up will be inspired by Scandinavian mountain cabins and Swiss chalets. Think reindeer fur, vintage skis, a snug fireplace and sofas to curl up on. Look out for shots served on skis, just don’t get piste…
Open Until May 2017
TV Chef Jimmy Garcia's Winter Pop-Up Restaurant

Running right through to the end of February 2017, The Lodge’s menu features seasonal small and sharing plates from Michelin star chefs plus signature fondues and drinks like hot cocktails, Swiss wines and Morand Liquors.
