Our Guide to… Christmas Afternoon Tea

It is beginning to look a lot like Christmas, and whilst we are all very excited about the most wonderful time of the year, it can sometimes be a little bit of a nightmare. Between fighting the crowds in your local supermarket to deciding which turkey to buy as well as present shopping it can all be just a touch stressful. Well, never fear, there is nothing better than an afternoon tea to settle those nerves. Combine this with a Christmas theme and it won’t be long until you are feeling the spirit. From edible snowman to cake pop baubles, we have rounded up some of our favourite festive teas for all of you to enjoy. Don your Christmas jumpers and make sure to head to some of these venues now – they are guaranteed to add some Christmas cheer into your day.

Conrad St James

What’s better than a snowman? An edible snowman obviously… sat next to a winter berry Christmas tree and sprinkled with edible snow. And you can find exactly this at Conrad St James, they’re serving up their Christmas tea until the 24th December in the Emmeline Lounge. Savoury morsels include a Brussel sprout mousse, before Christmas spiced scones, and then said edible snowman, we’ve also heard there are snowflake macaroons and yule logs! Available now until the 24th December www.conradhotels3.hilton.com

The Ampersand

It’s not often that we get more excited about the sandwiches than the cakes but the Ampersand’s Christmas tea is changing all that. Start with turkey and cranberry, stilton and apple and sausage and pear rolls – and trust us The Ampersand know how to do a good sandwich! Follow with mince pies, short bread Christmas trees and mulled wine jelly shots. Available now until the 28th December www.ampersandhotel.com

If you are afraid of heights, now is the perfect time to face those fears, if not for the delightful afternoon tea that will be taking place at Skylounge, the rooftop bar at the Double Tree Hotel. Rejoice mice pie haters, as there won’t be any mincemeat bundles in sight. Never fear though, the tea has just the right amount of Christmas sweetness to keep you going for a month. Think chocolate mousse baubles, red velvet cupcakes and white chocolate cake pops and you will get a feel for it. Obviously there will be sandwiches in tow, including the festive turkey – who knows from that height we might even see Rudolph. www.doubletree3.hilton.com

The Wellesley

Based in the heart of Knightsbridge and with a whole host of Christmas shops waiting for you around the corner, The Wellesley is definitely a festive tea that you should try, if not only to congratulate you on all of your great finds. Or, if the shopping was not so successful, the glass of champagne you will be greeted on arrival should offer some good commiseration. Reminding you exactly why you love Christmas, you will be treated to a whole host of seasonal treats, from Chocolate Cake to Mince Pies to Fig and Date Pudding and mulled wine. Combine this with their new Christmas blend and you will be in absolute bliss. Oh and if British Christmas pudding is not your thing, make sure to try the Italian kind which will also be on offer. Available now until 7th January www.thewellesley.co.uk

Cinnamon Soho

There is no where more Christmassy than Carnaby Street, so head there now for a festive tea with a difference. In aid of the merry season, Vivek Singh and Chef Ramachandran Raju have created a modern Indian take on the afternoon tea in the form of the Festive High Chai. The tea, which will certainly add some warmth into your day has just enough spice to help you face those Oxford and Regent Street crowds. Sweet treats include ginger and garam masala cake and spiced scones served with apple and fennel chutney. Don’t forget to try the Cinnamon Bellini for maximum Christmas merriment. Available throughout December. www.cinnamonsoho.com

The Dorchester

If you are looking for a more traditional tea, then head to The Dorchester, where you will be treated to the Festive Champagne Afternoon Tea. This tea comes complete with a selection of Christmas pastries, cakes and mince pies as well as all of your regular tea trimmings. Do not forget the champagne which will definitely bring on some Christmas merriment, or at least allow you to forget any Christmas party horrors. Available now until 2nd January. www.dorchestercollection.com

Shangri-La Hotel, The Shard

If you are looking to break some records this season, why not head to the Shangri-La at The Shard where at GŎNG you will be treated to the city’s highest Champagne Afternoon Tea. Yes, the tea will take place on the 52nd level of The Shard, adding a new dimension to tea in the clouds and definitely giving you something to talk about until at least Boxing Day. Keep an eye out for Santa’s sleigh as you sip on your champagne. Or if bubbles at that height are not your thing, head to the lounge where there will be a festive afternoon tea adorned with Christmas themed pastries, of course. Available now. www.gong-shangri-la.com

Mr Fogg’s Tipsy Tea

This one is for all of the Scrooges out there. In aid of the festive season, every Friday Mr Fogg’s will be hosting ‘A Christmas Carol’ themed tea complete with tea infused cocktails, which will certainly cheer up any Christmas Grinches. To get really into the Christmas spirit, grab some friends and try the ‘Phileas’ Pudding’ featuring Tanqueray Export gin, apple and lime juices mixed with fresh blackberries, Briska pomegranate cider and Fogg’s mulled wine all served in a traditional Christmas Pudding. Combine this with the Christmas pastries which will be on offer and voila, you’ll have a Christmas miracle. Available every Friday in December until 19th. www.mr-foggs.com

Grosvenor House

Grosvenor House, (a JW Marriot Hotel) has launched their Christmas afternoon tea and it’s running until New Year’s Eve so it’s perfect if you’re looking to escape the house/washing-up/relatives in those tricky days in between Christmas and the New Year’s Eve revelling. Alongside turkey and cranberry sandwiches there will also be chocolate and chestnut roulade, whisky panacotta with plum compote and ginger bread biscuits will be served with white chocolate mousse and finish it off with chocolate and orange cake topped with gold leaf. You’ll be a pro eater by the end of Christmas. Available now until 31st December www.marriott.co.uk
