It’s rather depressing having to write this but the rumours are in fact true, there is a most depressing day of the year and it so happens to be Monday, the 21st of January. Sky Travel calculated the day using various sums and algorithms back in 2005 and it sadly seems to have stuck, now giving us an actual calendar date named, Blue Monday, for our woes, duvet days and snooze-button pressing in dark and dismal Jan. It’s a time of limbo when mince pies have been eaten long ago, you’re desperately trying to lose the weight you promised yourself you would as the bell struck midnight on New Year, and work seems to be an endless loop of e-mails and cold coffee.
So, in a bid to turn that frown upside down we’ve mushed together a tonne of dealios, foodie or otherwise, to entice you out of your January hibernation lair and into the public eye for a good bit of socialising (a concept perhaps a little alien to you over the winter months). So here goes, some Blue Monday deals to slap a smile on the face. Oh and if Blue Monday so happens to be your birthday then we can only but apology and say that we’re sure everyone feeling down in the mouth is no reflection on the fact that you were born.

Caffeine For All
If there’s one thing us Brits need more of it’s free coffee. The fuel we reach for morning, noon and night to get us through days like Blue Monday. This year to celebrate, or commiserate rather, Maître Choux are giving away a free cup of the iconic Monmouth coffee with every purchase before noon.
You can’t go far wrong with a load of doughy yumminess for just £1, can you? BungaTINI in Covent Garden are serving up pizzas all day on Blue Monday for a price that’s as cheap as chips (or pizzas, if you will). All you have to do is buy a beer or any other item off the menu and the cheeriness is all yours to devour.
Fake It 'Till You Make It
You can fake it ’til you make it at YO! this Blue Monday as the food group launches their menu offering 40 dishes £3.00 each this January. Available until the 29th of January you can kill two birds with one stone by cheering yourself up and saving money with dishes including dragon roll, beef tataki sashimi and spicy pepper cauliflower.
Booze away your blues with two cocktails for £16 at Mews of Mayfair, in the cocktail or lounge bar. The Fever cocktail list features all sorts of scrumptious offerings such as the Pink Panther, Paloma, Trumps Revenge, Mews Punch, Lemon Drop or the Black Jack. Monday’s have never felt so good…
To warm you up on what’s set to be a cold and blue Monday why not wrap your hands around a Masala chai tea with black pepper, green cardamon, cinnamon and ginger from Teatulia in Covent Garden. The renowned tea bar are giving away free cups to anyone that stops by, and in the evening there’ll be free mindfulness classes from 6.30pm with Julie Berentsen of We Are Inside Out.
Instead of eating away your feelings under a duvet Bridget Jones style, why not head to Flemings in Mayfair and grab a cheeky 30% off their quintessential afternoon tea. The tea will sit at £48 for two people which means you can moan with a companion over sandwiches and cake. On the menu there’s classic finger sandwiches, homemade scones with Jersey Chantilly cream and a layer of petit fours which should solve any Blue Monday.

Bloomsbury-based Kalifornia Kitchen not only believe that healthy is sexy but also that giving people happiness shakes are a fabulous idea too. So, playing into their brand, the colourful, palm-tree laden hot-spot will be offering their signature drink for Blue Monday. Kalefornia, which uses kale, apple, celery, cucumber and lime juice will help you power up with vitamin B6 as kale converts tryptophan into serotonin. SO, it’s essentially a sure fire way to make you feel happy which is good enough for us!
Now here’s an eye-catcher! Mac & Wild, the meaty specialists, are offering 50% off their butcher cuts and we couldn’t be happier. Trundling down to London from the Scottish Highlands, Mac & Wild boasts extreme traceability with a menu stating the first name of the hunter / farmer / butcher, as well as the estate / farm the meat is sourced from. However this is not an excuse to take a trip down to the respective farms to get your hands on more of the good stuff – leave those poor farmers alone!
Turning Blue Monday into Purple Monday, Sambazon are offering a free lunch between 12.30pm–2.30pm at four Whole Foods Market venues, during which you could get your hands on Meghan Markle’s favourite Açai. Simply quote Purple Monday to Sambazon staff to redeem a free bowl.
Grays and Feather, lying snug in Covent Garden, popped open its doors just seven weeks ago and already it seems to be an alluring alternative to your classic wine and Champers bars. In light of this, we advise you to get yourselves down there this Blue Monday as the first 50 people that walk through the doors will receive a free glass of fizz. Thank us later!
Did Someone Say Free Churros?
Free churros and steaming cups of Mexican hot chocolate kinda speak for themselves, but in case you’re open-mouthed and in awe we’ll explain! For Blue Monday, one of our favourite Mexican’s Cantina Laredo will be quite literally giving away 100 free churros and hot cups of hot choc from 12pm and if lathers of chocolate don’t put a smile on your face then, well, read on…
Not only are Island Poké bowls colourful enough to brighten any Blue Monday but they taste darn good too. To help rid you of the woes, Island Poké have collaborated with Chotto Matte to create a Rainbow bowl. The bowl includes ingredients such as bright Red Jalapeño Sauce for the ceviché which has a grounding and energising effect and bright colours to appeal to your body’s chakras. Another mood boosting effect will come from 25p from each bowl going towards Mind mental health charity.
