Are you light blue or dark blue? Are you Oxford or Cambridge? It’s time to pick a side and cross fingers it’s the winning one. This weekend the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race takes place, and assuming you’ve not got academic skin in the game, you’ve got to choose which colour you’ll be wearing in support you’ll also have to think about the best spots for you and your mates to cheer on your favourite boat. Don’t be daunted The Handbook has comprised a list of the best riverside pubs for you to take in the race, drink, eat and boogie away afterwards.

Thai Square

At The Starting Line

Thai Square Putney Bridge can claim one of the best restaurant views to see the annual race kick off. There will be food stalls providing small Thai dishes and drinks on the riverbank but the best spot is on the restaurant’s second floor, where live broadcasts of the action will make sure you won’t miss any of the action further down the course. And when the race is over the fun isn’t, with the celebrations and live music continuing until 2am.

The Crab Tree

A little Further Down

The Crab Tree is an old Victorian pub thats been gastro’d up and is its third year of supporting the race with three bands who were so popular last year, they’ve got three new ones back. Tom Lucas, Dat Brass, and The Hanging Baskets, who will be there to keep you dancing long after the race as finished.

The Dove

Flowers on the Terrace

A public house has stood on this site since the seventeenth century, and The Dove is a thriving example of why. With its beautiful river terrace laced with brightly coloured flower boxes The Dove is a fun and vibrant place to get a great view of the race. It’s also known for its real ales, fine wines, and delicious food, so no panicking if you get peckish.

The Old Ship

Midway Stretch

This pub has fantastic riverside views across a large stretch of the river, come half way the boats will be fighting for the lead in the last half. Serving food that is quintessentially British, and you’ll feel like you’re in the right place to watch the Boat Race with the maritime decor and airy boathouse feel.

White Hart

The End Is In Sight

So close to the finish line you will almost smell it. The White Hart is in prime position for you to cheer your preferred team over the finish line. There is live music from The Monday Night Re-Runs before and after the races and an outside bar, to make sure you don’t miss a thing pegging it inside for your next pint. Oh and of course there is an outdoor BBQ to satiate any tummy grumbles.
