Stick It To The Man: Where To Get Your Freakshake On
Exactly how responsible are you? Can you cross a road unaided? Walk across the room holding a pair of scissors? Well a campaign group called Action on Sugar have decided that you probably shouldn’t be trusted to enjoy the occasional ‘freakshake’. We’re just going to ignore it and get our freak on.
The group have managed to get all over the press with a demand that the government ban all milkshakes containing more than 300 calories. While in reality it’s probably a pot-shot at McDonalds (a medium shake there contains a convenient 337 calories), all the reporting has, naturally, focussed on the ‘freakshake’ market. Freakshakes are those crazy, ‘freaky’ shakes that contain ALL of the delights in one place. Yes, they’re incredibly calorific, but they’re a one-off, a pudding, and anyway, we think you’re able to make the choice yourself. So here are some options…
Maxwell’s Bar & Grill
Dinner at the diner was never finer than at Maxwell’s Bar & Grill, famous for its American fare and, more importantly, for its freakshakes. I’m sorry, freakshake? Yes, the highly Instagramable drinks come in 20 flavours like Unicorn Freakshake and Salted Caramel Donut Freakshake and they’re massive and crazy and delicious. This is milkshake done the way nature intended.

Canvas
Who said that freakshakes couldn’t be healthy (well, apart from most of today’s papers)? At The Canvas they’ve got a vegan spin on the freakshake and they’re one of the main reasons that folks flock to the café, along with the great vegan cooking, the community hub and the great atmosphere. In fact, why are we not at The Canvas right now?

Burdock
On the ground floor of the Montcalm Royal London House, Burdock offer some incredible freakshakes. The all-day bar and café on Finsbury Square, offer a range of flavours, including Bourbon On Bourbon, putting together Bulleit whisky and chocolate biscuit (geddit?), and even the so-called Health Freak, which uses fat-free yoghurt, chia seeds and spirulina algae (we’ll stick with the Bourbon on Bourbon please). Finally there’s Jam Custard Doughnut, with strawberry jam and custard, which is basically the perfect drink.
