Happy weekend Handbookers! Yes, it’s only been a few short days (and getting shorter, have you noticed?), but the weekend is back upon us and with it no shortage of things to be getting up to. Here’s how you can indulge…
National Cupcake Week, contender for one of the worthiest national celebrations of the year, up there with diabetes week and so on, is quietly coming to an end. And of course Marylebone’s 108 Pantry have been all over it like fondant icing. With a limited edition menu of unique cupcakes created specially for the celebration, the bakery, led by Pastry Chef Moinal Islam and Executive Chef Russell Ford, have come up with a blueberry and marshmallow cupcake, a chocolate and blackberry creation plus a peanut butter and toffee popcorn cupcake.
Available from 18th – 24th September
Ain’t no brunch bottomless enough for this Diana Ross themed boozy brunch from Hip Hop LDN. The event, always held in a secret location, will celebrate everything disco, funk and boogie with the added advantage of bottomless cocktails and two course brunch. Arrive to an hour of bottomless drinks, followed by a fantastic two-course brunch, plus games (think theme-relevant: including ‘Soul Train’, a dancing competition) as well as some fabulous music and atmosphere.
Saturday 22nd September
Is there anything more click-baity than an a good looking dog picture? I thought not, which is one of the reasons I had to include Dog Day at Skylight in our weekend guide. The other reason is that it looks pretty funky too. Head to rooftop venue with your dog this weekend for doggy cocktails, human street food (as in, for people to eat, not made of), games and entertainment and an Instagram competition of a ‘best photo of a dog at Skylight’ (clearly we’re not the only ones running with the ‘nothing more click-baity than a good looking dog picture’ theme). You’d be barking not to head down to Wapping for this.
Sunday 23rd September
Forget the Streets of Philadelphia, we’re hitting the streets of Hackney Wick to celebrate Bruce Springsteen’s birthday. Mick’s Garage will be hosting a celebration for the big man’s 69th birthday (spoiler: we don’t think he’s going to be attending), teaming up with Bleeker on the food and DJs playing “non-stop Springsteen. No covers, no sh*t remixes, just straight up Bruce” to quote the organisers. At midnight the clocks strike Springsteen.
Saturday 22nd September
Live music fans, Aretha Franklin groupies and Quaglino loves will converge this weekend at the stylish underground restaurant at Quaglinos for Q Live. The Sunday event, a tribute to Aretha Franklin who died the other day, will celebrate the Queen of Soul with all her classics including R-E-S-P-E-C-T, Say a Little Prayer and Natural Woman belted out by Kristen, a tribute artist.
Sunday 23rd September
Free chips. By rights this post needs no more introduction, just an address and a time and we’re all off. But to give it a little context, Chipnation opened in Soho this week and so to celebrate they’re offering free chips this Friday between 12 and 2pm. The Chipnation team are a chip shop with a difference, they offer the finest chips with over 7,000 different flavour combos, leaving it up to you to decide exactly how you want your chips. From vegan to veggie to the rest of us, Chipnation is where you need to head when the chips are down. Or when they’re not.
Friday 21st September from 12 to 2pm or until they run out!
If spending your time gorging on chips isn’t quite your thing (and in which case you’re dead to me) then you might want to check out South Place Hotel’s Health and Wellness day. A collaboration with Oitoo Fitness and will see guests relax in the hotel’s Secret Garden, surrounded by an oasis of palm trees and waterfalls while engaging in stress relieving activities and mindfulness sessions, all designed to centre and calm the body. There will be cleansing health drinks and nibbles provided by Botanic Lab and Fresh Fitness Foods leaving you feeling revitalised and fresh for the week ahead. Okay, it’s not chips but it does actually sound pretty good.
“It’s a fight… it’s a real fight!”. If you immediately appreciate this Bridget Jones reference then you’re quite probably not in the Venn for this event, but nevertheless… Brigadiers are putting on a special event this Sunday for the fight. The big one. The heavyweight boxing match between Anthony Joshua and Alexander Povetkin and if you’re someone who’s into boxing you’ll know this is a pretty big deal. But if you’re the sort of person who would rather spend the match quietly chuckling at your own Bridget Jones jokes, have no fear, Brigadiers is the perfect place. While everyone else goes nuts over the boxing, enjoy the surroundings of this Indian army mess hall inspired restaurant and it’s delicious Indian barbecue dishes. Which is enough to mean I’d sit through dozens of rounds of fighting just to make the most of it.
Looking for inspiration as to where to head out for dinner this weekend? Look no further than Palatino. The Stevie Parle restaurant has just launched a whole new menu and we’re as keen as anyone to give it a try. The cit based Roman restaurant will be serving up delights such as sea bass, wrapped in fig leaves and stuffed with walnuts or a seasonal partridge, pancetta and agro dolce. And talking about dolce, the puddings look pretty pukka too, leaving me undecided as to finish off the panna cotta, Marsala poached fig or the strawberry, mascarpone and almond tart first. Or maybe both, because as they say: when in Rome…
The Autumn menu is available now. Also, if you can bear to look forward this far, Palatino are offering a free bottle of Prosecco or a £50 gift voucher if you make Christmas bookings for more than 6 people
