Between the World Cup and Wimbledon, there’s already a lot to watch in July- but if you’re a film fan, then you’ll be glad to know there’s a lot at the cinema this month too. From the massive Christopher Nolan epic starring Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway and Zendaya, to the relationship comedy The Invite, you’ll be spoilt for choice. Here’s everything you need to watch:

The Invite

The Invite has a very small cast, but what a cast it is: Seth Rogen, Olivia Wilde, Penelope Cruz and Edward Norton star together in an intriguing comedy film about two neighbouring couples. Directed by Wilde, it follows Joe (Rogen) and Angela (Wilde) and takes place entirely in their apartment over one night. The couple have been together for years, but their relationship has withered and deteriorated to the point where things are looking pretty rocky for them. Their upstairs neighbours Pina (Cruz) and Hawk (Norton) seem to have a much more passionate relationship, and when they suddenly turn up one evening on Joe and Angela’s doorstep, neither couple knows quite what to expect as they know little about each other. Soon enough, though, they get to know each other faster than expected.

The Odyssey

Easily one of the year’s most anticipated films, The Odyssey is Christopher Nolan’s follow-up to his Best Picture-winning Oppenheimer and adapts the classic Homeric epic. It’s got a massive all-star cast too, with Matt Damon playing Odysseus and Tom Holland as his son Telemachus. Other stars include Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o and Charlize Theron- to name a few. The three-hour film follows Odysseus, the Greek king of Ithaca, on his year-long journey home following the huge Trojan War. His wife Penelope and son Telemachus are both determined to find him, and along the way, Odysseus must deal with mythical beings and the interventions of the gods. Like other Nolan films, the near three-hour epic will be available to watch in IMAX for that truly big screen experience.

Spider-Man Brand New Day

The Odyssey isn’t the only film that Tom Holland and Zendaya are in this month- there’s also the small matter of the return of web-slinging superhero Spider-Man. This fourth Holland Spider-Man film sees him fully immersed in his role as New York City’s foremost crime fighter, even as the pressures on him begin to mount. In his personal life, Peter Parker is still not used to the fact that his former girlfriend MJ (Zendaya), best friend Ned and everyone else have forgotten who he is following the events of the previous film, and he lives alone. His Spider-Man identity is all he has left, but the toll everything is taking seems to not just be mental but physical as well, leading him to seek help before his life is threatened.

Rosebush Pruning

A dark comedy thriller in the mould of Saltburn, Rosebush Pruning stars Callum Turner, Riley Keough and Elle Fanning in a satirical look at an “affluent but perverse family”. Turner plays Ed, one of the younger family members, and one of several children of the parents (only called “the Father” and “the Mother”) played by Tracy Letts and Pamela Anderson. The family recently moved from New York City to Catalonia, but lost Mother when she was suddenly killed. But things get strained when one of the children, Jack (Jamie Bell) brings his girlfriend (Fanning) home, causing major tensions in a family that all have decidedly weird relationships with each other.

Nirvana the Band the Show the Movie

This isn’t a Kurt Cobain biopic, but rather a Canadian comedy film which got a cult following online and critical acclaim on release. It follows the previous web/TV series Nirvana the Band the Show– but you don’t need to have seen that to see the film. Directed by Matt Johnson and stars Johnson and Jay McCarrol as fictionalised versions of themselves as they try to book a gig at a music bar in Toronto. However, their plan to do so results in the pair being transported back in time to 2008, and they end up trying to locate their past selves. Their anarchic adventure leads them to realise that the only way back to the present is to get hold of an obscure, discontinued energy drink.
