“I Have Expensive Taste, But My Favourite Accessory Costs Just £1”

I’m going to warn you: this isn’t for everyone. I, too, have actually opposed this very accessory for most of my life but this summer, something changed. After years of considering flip-flops inherently unchic, I now can’t get enough of them – here’s why.
The new hero piece

First, let’s recap what changed. I blame The Row for making flip-flops feel cool again. Suddenly, wearing a pair of black or red sandals is seen as the epitome of cool because they’re so… effortless. Here’s why I’m converted:
They’re affordable – I picked up the pair I’m wearing on repeat for just £1.
They’re flat – a big requirement in any shoe I’m going to repeatedly reach for.
They’re incredibly versatile – with no embellishment or hardware, they go with practically everything in my wardrobe.

How I style them

If you’re in a super corporate office, feel free to take this with a pinch of salt, but I wear my flip-flops to work all the time. On the weekend, you can see me pairing them with denim bermudas but, 9-5, I’m mostly teaming them with a pair of smart trousers.
It’s this high-low contrast of tailored pieces (fitted waistcoats are another case in point), with the off-duty shoe, that means you can ‘get away’ with wearing them at work. If, however, I went for a mini skirt and tank top, it would give ‘got lost on the way to the airport’ vibes.
