“How I’m Elevating My Everyday Makeup For Diwali”

There’s something about the stretch from Diwali to Christmas that makes getting dressed feel like an occasion in itself. For me, November marks the beginning of a calendar filled with parties, dinners, and so many opportunities to dress up. But when it comes to festive makeup, I’m still finding my feet; while the season might call for glitter and bold eyeshadow, I’ve always gravitated towards the tried-and-tested looks that make me feel most like myself.
This year, I’ve been experimenting with ways to elevate my everyday makeup for the occasion – subtle shifts that feel special without losing sight of what I know and love. Here’s what I’ve learnt:
1. Eyeshadow really makes a difference
Day to day, my makeup rarely strays beyond a winged liner or, if I’m feeling particularly adventurous, a little bronzer through the crease. But last year, I invested in a gorgeous Victoria Beckham eyeshadow palette that’s become something of a workhorse in my makeup bag. The shades are versatile enough for every occasion, making it the perfect way to add a little something extra to my everyday look. I’m always amazed at how sculpted it can make my eyes.

2. More isn’t always more
Have you ever spent ages doing your makeup, only to see the photos afterwards and wonder where it all went? I used to fall into the trap of keeping things subtle, worried that anything more would look over the top in person. But there’s an art to applying enough makeup to translate on camera without feeling like you’re wearing too much IRL. The secret, as it turns out, was simply using a little more product. It’s literally that simple?! Now, when I go to an event, I’ll add a little more bronzer and blush in order to add more dimension and colour to my face.
3. Highlighter is so pretty
For a while, highlighter felt like one of those makeup trends I’d moved on from. But recently, a makeup artist friend reminded me of just how pretty it can look when done right. I’ve been swapping glittery formulas for something more subtle and light-reflecting, almost like a sheen on the skin. Applied to the high points of the face, particularly the apples of the cheeks, it catches the light beautifully, giving the skin that gorgeous, healthy glow. A little reminder that sometimes it’s worth revisiting the things you thought you’d left behind.
