Jacob Elordi, Margaret Qualley, Josh Brolin and Ridley Scott- any project that has that list of names attached is guaranteed to get our attention. The Dog Stars, Scott’s latest film, is due to arrive in cinemas later this year and is set in a desolate future where humans fight to survive in the aftermath of a catastrophe. The first trailer was recently unveiled by 20th Century Studios- here’s everyone we know so far:

What is The Dog Stars about?

The Dog Stars is based on the 2012 novel of the same name written by Peter Heller, and was snapped up by Scott to be his next big project. Like the book, the film takes place in a post-apocalyptic version of America, with the country and most of the planet having been devastated by a deadly flu pandemic. Here we find our lead protagonist, Hig (played by Elordi), who was once a civilian pilot and now lives amongst the ruins of civilisation, inside an abandoned aircraft hangar. And yes, before you ask, based on the film’s title, he does have a four-legged companion, named Jasper.

It’s during this point in time that he encounters a stony-faced ex-marine, Bangley (played by Josh Brolin), who doesn’t take his survival lightly. Hig is hopeful that he can one day break the monotony of living in ruins and dreams of getting in a plane and flying elsewhere, while Bangley butts heads with him about the idea of taking any risks. Hig also meets Cima, a medic played by Qualley, who looks like a growing love interest for the lonely pilot.

There’s also the dangerous threat of scavengers called Reapers in the film, and surely Hig’s interest in aviation means he’s a prime target for them to pursue. As the newly formed group of survivors try to survive, Hig is adamant on finding the source of a mysterious radio transmission coming from somewhere else in this post-apocalyptic world, with a hope to discover some kind of sanctuary and a secure future.

Who else stars?

There are a few other big names in the cast starring alongside Elordi, Qualley and Brolin, including Allison Janney, Guy Pearce and Benedict Wong. An official trailer (which you can watch below) gives a glimpse of the trio and Hig’s dream to escape their situation, as well as Janey and Pearce’s characters- oh, and the dog! The Dog Stars will be released in cinemas on August 28th 2026.
