Daisy Ridley Stars In A New Thriller Magpie
If you love a good thriller-drama, then make sure to check out Star Wars star Daisy Ridley’s new film Magpie, available on Amazon Prime in the UK. The actress plays a mother whose daughter is starring in a film with a movie star and finds herself suspicious that her husband may be having an affair with the star. Left at home with their newborn child, she’s unsure what to feel and how to proceed- here’s all you need to know about the tense drama.
What is Magpie about?
Directed by Sam Yates in his directorial debut and written by actor Tom Bateman (Based On A True Story), Magpie centres around Anette (Ridley), and her relationship with Ben (Shazad Latif). They’re married and have two children, but their life together isn’t quite a happy one. Ben’s behaviour towards her is cold and controlling, treating Anette poorly, ranging from not acknowledging her to getting upset and angry. He’s a struggling writer whose career doesn’t seem to be going anywhere, and she worked in publishing before the two moved to the country to raise children. Feeling like she has to walk on eggshells around him and try her best to keep things smooth, Anette tries to keep their marriage intact for their children.
Their eldest daughter, Tillie, is a child actress and has recently been cast in a film with a successful movie star named Alicia. Stuck at home, isolated and knowing that her relationship is on the rocks, Anette struggles not only to look after their newborn Lucas, but also with the strong suspicion that Ben is falling for Alicia, and possibly having an affair. Feeling that everything could collapse, Anette tries to work out what to do next- as secrets and lies begin to appear that could upend and destroy everything. It all rushes to a shocking conclusion at the end of its 90-minute runtime.
Who else stars, and what else do we know?
Italian actress Matilda Lutz (Reptile) plays Alicia, and the film also stars Pippa Bennet-Warner (Chloe), Alistair Petrie (Sex Education) and Cherrelle Skeete (Hanna). It’s now available to watch on Amazon Prime in the UK, and you can watch the trailer below.
