Although Timothée Chalamet lost out on the best actor Oscar last year for playing Bob Dylan, he’s back with another enigmatic film that looks to be competing in this year’s awards season. Directed by Josh Safdie and releasing from A24, Marty Supreme is described as a “sports adventure comedy-drama”, and stars Chalamet as the titular Marty opposite Gwyneth Paltrow as a fictional movie star. Out on Boxing Day, here’s everything we know:

What is Marty Supreme about?

Set photos of Chalamet filming Marty Supreme have been floating around on social media for months now, but what exactly the film was about remained something of a mystery. The project is helmed by Josh Safdie, one-half of the Safdie brothers duo who made Uncut Gems. A period drama set in the ’50s, Marty Supreme follows a table tennis player and his life story- so if you thought there weren’t enough ping pong movies out there, this film is for you. We’re introduced to Marty Mauser in the film’s official trailer, an especially talented ping pong player who certainly seems to believe his own hype. But he also believes in the sport, and is keen to convince others of this: “I know it’s hard to believe, but this game, it fills stadiums overseas,” he says.

However, the synopsis indicates that his dream is one that “no one else respects”, despite his dogged determination to make a name for himself. According to Deadline, the film is inspired by real-life ping pong player Marty Reisman (though it isn’t a biopic). Not much is known about the character that Paltrow plays, Carol Dunne, other than she appears to be a movie star and that Marty tries to get her attention at the start of the trailer. Despite his lofty ambitions, though, Marty admits that “everything in my life is falling apart”, hinting at plenty of conflict to come.

Who else stars?

Also starring in the film are Odessa A’zion (Until Dawn), Abel Ferrara (The Funeral) and Fran Drescher (After Class). It also features debut film acting performances from three well-known faces: Tyler Okonma (aka Tyler, the Creator), businessman Kevin O’Leary (best known for Shark Tank), and magician Penn Jillette (Penn & Teller: Fool Us).

When does it release?

Marty Supreme is out in the UK on 26th December 2025.
