Materialists Sees Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal & Chris Evans In A Love Triangle
Materialists, an A24 film releasing today, is definitely one of the new movies of 2025 that we’re most excited about- particularly now that it’s just got a trailer. A romantic comedy that stars Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal, and directed by Celine Song, it follows a woman (played by Johnson) who is very good at matchmaking and is highly sought after, with wealthy clients paying a premium to use her business. But her own feelings for two people in her life threaten to send it all crashing down. Here’s all we know:
What is Materialists about?
Materialists is the new film from Celine Song, who wrote and directed the Oscar-nominated film Past Lives, one of the best films from 2023. The follow-up to her debut has some big stars attached: Fifty Shades and The Lost Daughter star Dakota Johnson, Marvel and Knives Out star Chris Evans, and The Last of Us and Gladiator star Pedro Pascal. Even without those A-listers, the follow-up to Past Lives would be too hard to miss.
Plotwise, it all revolves around Lucy, played by Johnson, and her very special talent for matchmaking and getting people together. Dating apps are out of the window for her list of clients, who are generally the rich elite of New York City. Such a business is only getting more valuable, and Lucy has a lucrative thing going – but it could all unravel without her meaning it. She meets the handsome and very rich Randy (Pascal), who seems to be able to sweep her off her feet when he inquires about her matchmaking. But, despite how charming he is, there’s another person in her life: John, an old friend who she’s known for some time and who works in catering as a waiter.
John definitely has feelings for her and seems quickly resigned to the fact that the suaveness of Randy will seal the deal for Lucy. But her affection for him remains ambiguous, creating a love triangle that could threaten the rest of her clients and business. The official trailer for Materialists, which was just released, gives us glimpses of the trio that we came for, but also some of the varying clients that Lucy has to deal with, picky dating demands and all.
Who else stars, and when does the film release?
The rest of the cast includes Marin Ireland (Dope Thief), Dasha Nekrasova (Succession and host of the Red Scare podcast), Louisa Jacobson (The Gilded Age) and Sawyer Spielberg (Masters of the Air). Materialists releases in UK theatres today [13th August].
