Pluribus Is The Mysterious New Show From The Creator Of Breaking Bad
The creator of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul is back with a new show: Pluribus is a mysterious new sci-fi Apple series from Vince Gilligan that premieres in November, and stars Better Call Saul’s Rhea Seerhorn in the lead role.
The series follows a woman who appears to be the only unhappy person in a world where everyone is happy, and who suddenly catches the unwanted attention of mysterious figures who send her cryptic messages. Here’s all we know so far:
What is Pluribus about?
When a new series is created by the award-winning writer behind Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, it’s not surprising it’s not surprising that it would become one of the most anticipated shows of the year. While Vince Gilligan’s other two crime dramas were both set in the same universe and featured many of the same characters, Pluribus is an entirely new project, distinct from the world of Walter White and Saul Goodman. The only two elements it shares are that it stars Rhea Seerhorn, who played Kim in Better Call Saul, and that it’s set in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Seerhorn plays Carol, an author based in New Mexico and is a very miserable person – possibly the most miserable on Earth. In Pluribus, the rest of the world has been affected by a strange virus that has the effect of making anyone and everyone afflicted by it permanently cheerful.
The only person for whom the virus seems to have no effect is Carol, who continues to live in a depressed, low-energy state and has little time for everyone else, happy as they are. But who exactly is Carol, and what is her place in the world? The teasers Apple has released so far give little away in a very deliberate marketing campaign. They feature no dialogue at all: one, called “Taking Out the Trash”, shows her watching a drone very slowly attempting to pick up her rubbish bags outside her house, while another, “How’s the Flight, Carol?” simply shows Carol being watched silently by a woman who is the only other person on a flight she’s on.
We do know, though, that Carol’s apparently unique nature, as the one person unaffected by the virus, leads to her being noticed by mysterious people who keep sending her cryptic messages. A phone number featured in some of the teasers, if called in real life, results in a voice message addressed to Carol, saying “we can’t wait for you to join us.” What does all of this mean? All will hopefully be revealed when the show premieres, but judging by Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, expect the series to be a slow burn that takes its time giving answers.
What else do we know, and when does Pluribus release?
The show is set to also star Karolina Wydra (Twin Peaks), Miriam Shor (American Fiction) and Samba Shute (Our Flag Means Death). The debut season, which will consist of nine episodes, will begin on Apple TV+ on 7th November. While the content of the show remains mysterious, Apple has also commissioned a second season to air in the future- stay tuned for more Pluribus info in the coming weeks.
