Red One: The Action Comedy To Watch This Christmas

If you hadn’t noticed with mince pies in the shops and that mad dash for presents atmosphere, Christmas is only a few weeks away. Which of course means a slew of TV and movies to cosy up to under a blanket over the Xmas break.
Prime Video is releasing what it hopes will be a future Christmas favourite: Red One, starring Dwayne Johnson, Chris Evans, Lucy Liu and Kiernan Shipka. Here’s all you need to know:
What is Red One about?

Red One revolves around a fairly simple premise: everyone’s favourite jolly old man Santa Claus (played here by J.K. Simmons) suddenly disappears when he’s kidnapped by a mysterious team of foot soldiers. This catches the attention of Callum Drift (Johnson), Santa’s head of security at the North Pole, who in turn alerts director Zoe Harlow (Liu.) Having stopped feeling the Christmas spirit over the years and tiring of his job, Callum had hoped to hang up his snow boots and retire, but he’s now forced to postpone that wish in order to track down Mr Claus and of course, save Christmas.
He’ll need to rely however on someone who isn’t hugely reliable- the sleezy Jack O’Malley (played by Evans), who happens to be an expert at tracking and hacking. They’re soon put on the trail of the villainous Gryla (Shipka), who seems to be the one who’s trying to steal Christmas. Callum and Jack will often clash along the way- especially since Jack didn’t believe in Santa even as a child. Accompanied by a huge talking polar bear, (Reinaldo Faberlle), they set out on their mission, difficult as it may be.
What else do we know, and who else is in the cast?

The film certainly isn’t quite your standard Christmas movie, with even Santa himself looking like more of an action hero than the twinkly eyed St Nick we’re used to. The official trailer, which you can watch below, showcases Johnson, Evans, Liu and co. as they battle all the kinds of creatures you’d associate with the festive season. Meanwhile, Bonnie Hunt, Nick Kroll, Mary Elizabeth Ellis and Marc Evan Jackson also star. The film is now out in cinemas, and releases on streaming later this year.
