5 Of The Biggest Questions We Need Answered In Severance Season 2

16th January 2025 | By Patrick Dunne

One of TV’s best shows is set to return next week, and we’re hyped. It’s been three long years since season one, with a mixture of Covid and strikes delaying the show. To say fans have been patient is an understatement – you might think the long delay has tempered some of the hype, but one scroll of the Reddit page and you’ll see a frenzy of theorising and joy that Season two is actually upon us.

What is Severance Season 2 about?

Coming nearly three years after the first, season 2 is set to pick up from the cliffhanger ending left by the season finale. Adam Scott’s character, Mark, who works for biotech company Lumon Industries, has been “severed”, which means he has a chip implanted in him which creates a separate consciousness, the “innie”. Their outside personality, the “outie”, disappears when they work in certain classified sections of the company. Not since Lost has there been a show ripe with mysteries, and we have certain questions we need answered this season. Needless to say, spoilers ahead for anyone who hasn’t yet seen season one.

5 questions we need answered in Season 2:

How is Gemma alive?

One of the biggest reveals of Season 1 is that Ms Casey, Lumon’s wellness counsellor, is actually Mark’s wife Gemma, who it had been thought had died in a car crash, the trauma of which led Mark to consider severance in the first place.

It raises a whole host of questions: Was Gemma never killed? Or, more likely (and troubling), are Lumon harvesting critically injured bodies to create ‘permanent’ innies? The last we see of Ms Casey is her being sent down to the testing floor presumably to be reset, as it’s revealed rather than being severed she instead has no life outside the company.

This is one of the darkest clues we have about the workings of Lumon.

What is Lumon?

Maybe the biggest mystery of the show – at least for now – is what Lumon actually does? The jobs carried out by our protagonist seemingly make no sense – either putting letters in a box seemingly arbitrarily or hanging paintings around the hall. We’ve had little clue as to what the company actually does, and the more we learn the stranger it gets.

What is Cobel up to?

Of all Lumon’s upper management, Cobel is the most intriguing. Whereas Milchick and Lydia function very much as faces of the company, from the start it’s clear Cobel has her own agenda. Throughout season one, she follows Mark’s innie and outie and pushes him together with Ms Casey to see if his outie recognises her, and if there is any hint of the severance procedure being overturned.

After she is fired for not towing the company line, she aims to claim her job back by notifying Lumon about the innie revolt – whether out of company loyalty or to continue her own experiments remains to be seen. Fans have theorised she is actually trying to take the company down from the inside, but at this point nothing is certain.

What is Irving’s backstory?

Fans have theorised – and the show has laid clues – that while the rest of the microdata refinement team are in their first role with Lumon, Irving has a deeper history with the company. Eagle-eyed viewers have spotted his employee card goes back longer than the two-and-a-half years he says he has been at the company and his romantic connection with Burt suggests they have a prior history.

Has he previously been in a different area of the company and had his innie reset, and thus his memory wiped?

While the rest of the microdata refinement team are in their first role with Lumon, Irving seems to have a deeper history with the company.

What will happen to Helly’s innie?

In season one Helly’s innie and outie are basically in an all-out war. Innie Helly is desperate to get out of Lumon, going so far as to attempt to hang herself in the elevator. But outie Helly displays no sympathy, constantly sending her back in once again to the purgatorial work day.

The finale explained this – she’s actually the daughter of Lumon CEO Jame Eagan and a huge proponent of the severance procedure. After innie Helly rebels, it seems clear she is in for a rough punishment in season two.
