One of TV’s best- but possibly underrated comedies is Shrinking, about a grieving therapist (Jason Segel) who decides to move on by telling patients exactly what’s on his mind, even if it oversteps what’s professional. Happily, it’s back for Season 3, and with more of the same emotional catharsis. It finds Jimmy Laird (Segel) still seeing patients, but preparing for that big change all parents must face: their child leaving home. Here’s everything we know so far:

What is Shrinking Season 3 about?

Apple’s series has touched heavily on themes ranging from grief to forgiveness, and this season seems to be focusing on change. In the aftermath of the loss of his wife, which opened the first season, Jimmy found himself rekindling the strained connection with his teen daughter Alice (Lukita Maxwell), which gave him new purpose. Fast forward to this third season, and Alice is getting ready to begin a new life at college, leaving Jimmy behind. He might be proud of her and excited for her future endeavours, but the prospect remains daunting. Still, he won’t be entirely alone, with his fellow therapist Gaby (Jessica Williams) still in town and overcoming challenges of their own- with the pair’s friendship as complex as ever. And with Gaby continuing her relationship with Derrick (Damon Wayans Jr.), might Jimmy at last find a new love for himself?

The other continuing storyline for Season 3 is that of Paul, another therapist, played again by Harrison Ford in one of his most endearing performances. Living with a Parkinson’s diagnosis, the older and wiser mentor to Jimmy is facing his own mortality. One of the show’s big new guest names is Michael J. Fox, who’ll be appearing to give advice to Ford’s fan favourite character on what to expect when dealing with a debilitating condition. There’s a sense that Paul, too, will one day part ways with Jimmy (fear not, though, the trailer indicates there’ll be plenty more Ford this season).

What else do we know, and when can I watch?

The other big new addition to the cast is Jeff Daniels, who is stepping into the role of Jimmy’s father. Their dynamic will form one of the key elements of the latest season’s storyline, with Jimmy having struggled with his dad’s distant nature and neurotic tendencies that he himself displays. Both Cobie Smulders and Brett Goldstein will be back as Sofi and Louis, respectively. Shrinking Season 3 is out now Apple TV+ – watch the trailer below.
